He was initially trained in India as a Neurosurgeon at one of the two largest teaching Hospitals in Asia and later worked as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the largest teaching Private Hospitals in India (New Delhi) before coming to the UK in 1996. He trained at the United Leeds Teaching Hospitals and was employed as a Consultant Neurosurgeon at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire in August 2001. He has 21 years of experience as a neurosurgeon including his experience in India.

While training in Leeds, he performed research on ‘Photodynamic therapy in recurrent Pituitary adenomas’, which is one of his areas of interest. He runs a joint pituitary clinic with one of the Endocrinologists at the University Hospitals of Coventry and Warwickshire.

He is well recognised for his work on complex cervical spine and was one of the First Neurosurgeons in the Country and the first neurosurgeon in the West Midlands (along with an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham) to offer total cervical disc replacement to selected patients suffering form degenerative cervical disc disease. The first procedure that he did was covered on BBC West Midlands news on the 12 June 2007. This is on BBC website (on a video format) and can be accessed by searching ‘Neck pain’. He has successfully performed close to 60 total cervical disc replacements so far with very good results. He is auditing his results at present.

Mr Saxena is committed to training and is currently the Chairman for the Higher Surgical Speciality Training Committee in neurosurgery for the West Midlands. 

He is a member of the National Selection Board for Neurosurgery, which is responsible for recruitment of neurosurgical trainees in the entire country. He is also on the faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons in London and teaches regularly on courses run by the Raven Department of Education at the Royal College. He also performs general spine care services.

All Cervical Spine pathologies including degenerative spine, rheumatoid necks, trauma and tumous, along with spinal instrumentation. Already performed one mobile artificial cervical disc replacement (one of the first few in the country) and waiting to start regular replacements once approval granted. Lumbar pathologies with interest in micro-discectomy approach for lumbar discs. Subarachmoid haemorrhage and surgery for intracranial aneurysms and AVMS, cavernous haemangiomas etc. All brain tumours with special interest in Pituitary adenomas (trans-sphenoidal approach) and meningiomas. First to start endoscopic third venticulopstomy for hydrocephalus at Walsgrave Hospital and I am interested in developing endoscopic ventriculopstomy as an alternative to shunts. Micro-vascular decompression (surgery) for Trigeminal neuralgia because of my special interest in vascular surgery.
