About Mr Ajay Swaminathan

Personal Profile

Ajay Swaminathan is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with his NHS practice based at Mid Cheshire (Leighton) Hospital and at the Hewitt Fertility Centre (HFC) Knutsford (Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS FT).

Ajay is a British Menopause Society accredited menopause specialist being a named specialist on the BMS register.

His areas of special interest are Menopause, Subfertility and Laparoscopic Surgery including surgery for endometriosis and pelvic pain. He is the deputy lead for gynaecology oncology at Leighton hospital and a member of the South Manchester Cancer Network MDT and perform key hole hysterectomies (laparoscopic) for endometrial cancers. 

Ajay joined Mid Cheshire Hospitals as a consultant in 2012 after completing his training in the Mersey rotation. He attended the Kiel School of Gynaecological Endoscopy in Germany. Ajay is a British Fertility Society accredited specialist in pelvic ultrasound.

Ajay sees patients with heavy periods, pelvic masses and fibroids, subfertility, pelvic pain, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, recurrent miscarriages, menopausal symptoms and vulval disease. At Leighton hospital he implemented the enhanced recovery programme for gynaecological surgery and streamlined the consenting process for gynaecological surgeries.

He was the Principal Investigator at Leighton Hospital for the GaPP2 trial (multi-centre randomised controlled trial looking at Gabapentin in pelvic pain).

Ajay completed his Diploma in Management in 2012 from the LSE. He is involved in recruiting candidates at ST level at both local and regional levels as well as being a chair and panellist at Consultant interviews. Ajay mentors newly appointed consultants at Mid Cheshire Hospitals.

He is involved in training candidates for the MRCOG examinations and was an RCOG moderator for the Enhanced Revision Programme.  He was the departmental lead for Undergraduate Medical Education with the Manchester Medical School.
