Mr Adam Way is a consultant spinal surgeon specialising in neck and lower back pain. His surgical practice focuses on the use of minimally invasive techniques, and he offers a full range of spinal treatments including injections, vertobroplasty/kyphoplasty (injecting acrylic bone cement into a fracture through a hole in the skin), cervical disc replacement or fusion, and lumbar microdiscectomies, decompressions and fusions.

As well as the above, Adam has a particular interest in degenerative spine disorders, cervical spine disc replacement and disc fusion surgery, lumbar fusion surgery, spinal fractures, tumour and trauma spinal surgery, and spinal oncology.

Training and Appointment

Mr Way grew up in Surrey and attended Bradfield College in Reading. He then went on to and graduated from Sheffield University Medical School and carried out his basic surgical training at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, London, the Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow, and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London.

Adam studied for his MSc in Surgical Sciences at University College London and then went on to Higher Surgical Training at Barts and the Royal London Hospital. He focused his registrar training towards becoming a spinal surgeon, spending two years on the spinal unit at Stanmore, London.

Following this, Adam spent another year completing an advanced spinal surgery fellowship, which involved a thoroughly comprehensive clinical exposure to paediatric and adult spinal disorders and offered further opportunities for scientific and clinical research projects.

Mr Way regularly participates in, and has this year attended a virtual version of the annual British Spinal Conference, BritSpine. Now in its eleventh year, this is a multi-disciplinary scientific meeting bringing together the world’s experts in spinal conditions, research and treatment.

He is a member of the British Medical Association, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the British Association of Spinal Surgeons.

Research and clinical interests

Adam's research has been published nationally and internationally, and includes the first detailed examination of the impact of spinal surgeries on members of the military who have experienced lumbar disc prolapse. He also lectures on spinal and trauma surgery, as well as assessing examinations and conducting interviews for the London and Kent, and Surrey and Sussex, Deaneries. Adam is on the executive board of the British Association of Spinal Surgeons’ as Membership Secretary.

Current Practice

Adam has an NHS base at Frimley Park Hospital and offers a weekly clinic at Mount Alvernia.  He offers diagnosis and treatment of cervical spine surgery, discectomy, epidural for back pain, lumbar laminectomy, lumbar microdiscectomy, lumbar spinal decompression and minimally invasive spinal surgery (MISS).
