About Mr Adam Blackburn

Personal Profile

Mr Adam Blackburn is a Cosmetic Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Breast Surgeon who specialises in microsurgical breast reconstruction (DIEP, TUG, LUG, and LD flaps), skin cancer, lower limb, and perineal reconstruction.

Training and Appointment

Mr Blackburn studied medicine at Imperial College School of Medicine (University of London) where he graduated with distinction. While studying for his MBBS degree he obtained a first-class degree in physiology and was awarded the British Physiological Society's undergraduate prize.

Following his basic surgical training at Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, he commenced his plastic surgery training in 2002. He trained at Wexham Park, St George's, Charing Cross, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals before moving to the North East of England to complete his higher surgical training. During this training, he gained experience in all aspects of plastic surgery, both cosmetic and reconstructive.

In 2010 he was awarded a prestigious trauma fellowship at the world renowned (for trauma reconstruction) Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, South India. There he refined how best to use advanced microsurgical techniques in the management of patients with major trauma.

In 2011 he returned to London having been appointed to the distinguished post of microsurgical fellow at St Thomas' Hospital. Here he spent 15 months honing his expertise in microsurgical breast reconstruction, perineal reconstruction, and chest wall reconstruction.

Mr Blackburn started working at the world-famous plastic surgery hospital, the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead in 2012 and is a substantive consultant there, where he has a busy practice reconstructing patients following breast cancer (DIEP, TUG, LUG, and LD flaps) and managing patients with skin cancers.

He is also an Honorary Consultant at the Royal Surrey County Hospital where he performs complex microsurgical breast reconstructions and perineal reconstructions for the departments of gynaecology and general surgery.

Publications, lectures, and teaching

Mr Blackburn understands the importance of listening to patients and finding out exactly what they desire before committing to surgery. In 2008 he wrote a scientific paper on the importance of listening to patients and understanding their concerns in cosmetic surgery. This won the prize for the best paper about cosmetic surgery, published in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery that year.

Current Practice

Within his NHS practice, Mr Blackburn specialises in microsurgical breast reconstruction, gynaecological and perineal reconstruction, skin cancer, and lower limb. His private practice at Mount Alvernia mirrors his NHS practice and he also sub-specialises in cosmetic breast and abdominal surgery, alongside the management of benign and malignant skin lesions.  He has been trained in all aspects of aesthetic surgery but focuses on his clinical interests (breast and abdomen).
