About Mr Abiodun Fakokunde

Personal Profile

Graduated with honours from the University of Ibadan Medical School in 1987. Subsequently commenced postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology at the University College Hospital, Ibadan Nigeria in 1991.

Training was completed with the award of the Fellowship of the West African College of Surgeons (Obstetrics and Gynaecology faculty) in 1996. Came to the United Kingdom in 1996 on Overseas Doctors Training Scheme, became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in 1997. Commenced postgraduate residency training in the London Deanery and subsequently in East Anglian.

Worked and trained under supervision of eminent obstetricians and gynaecologists at various hospitals within the period. Worked at the Southend Hospitals, Whipps Cross University Hospital, James Paget Hospital, North Middlesex University Hospital, Homerton University Hospital, and completed training at Colchester General Hospital. Spent 18 months at the St Michael’s Hospital Bristol as a research trainee working on precancer lesions of the cervix. 

Appointed a consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the North Middlesex University Hospital Edmonton London in 2005. He runs private services with the Circle Health Group hospitals in Enfield and Hendon. Developed services in obstetrics and gynaecology. Pioneered the concept of outpatient induction in pregnant women.

Gynaecological services provided include colposcopy, endoscopy surgery (hysteroscopy and laparoscopy) and expanded scope of care for women with uterine fibroids. Other interests include managing women with endometriosis and menstrual irregularities.

As a lead gynaecologist for fibroids related cases in the unit, provide didactic services to women with fibroids offering conservative, medical, uterine conserving surgery as well as definitive surgical treatment. Also run a monthly joint clinic with an intervention radiologist to provide care for women with uterine fibroids. 

Appointed a Fellow of the RCOG in 2016.

Active in training and teaching with current position as the Preceptor for the advanced training in Benign gynaecological surgery in London North Deanery training program. Holds Honorary appointment as Senior Lecturer in O/G at the University College London Medical School as well as an Associate Professor with St George’s Medical School Granada.

In addition to clinical work, has held appointment as clinical lead for O/G and deputy clinical director the division of Women and Children Services. 

Widely published in peer review journals as well as numerous posters and presentation at Local, National and International conferences and meetings.

Current professional memberships include RCOG, British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP), and Britain Society of Gynaecology Endoscopy (BSGE).

Interest outside medicine include community engagement educating and talking on women’s health. Enjoy golf in spare time, nature photography as well as traveling.
