He was subsequently given Honorary Consultant appointments to Bromley, Sidcup, and King’s College Hospitals. He provided specialist Vascular clinics for the local residents to prevent excessive travel to Central London Hospitals.
He was given a substantive appointment to St Thomas’ Hospital, where he worked closely with his colleagues to provide a specialist emergency vascular service on a single site.
He was instrumental in the provision of The Vascular Emergency Service for South-East London and Kent. He provided this service pro-bono for the first 10 years of his appointment.
Aaron pioneered the use of lasers in vein surgery with his friend and colleague Mr Eddie Chaloner.
He became The Clinical Director for Surgery at University Hospital Lewisham, where he ensured laser vein surgery was available on the NHS. He transformed the vascular service into one of the largest in the UK. In the first years of this new service he operated on many thousands of patients.
He ensured the arrival of a dedicated vascular laboratory at Lewisham.
He trained many other surgeons in Endovenous Laser Treatment of Varicose Veins.
He was recognized for his emergency training and many surgeons performed their first ruptured aortic aneurysm repairs with his careful assistance.
His main research and clinical interest was minimally invasive varicose vein surgery.
He has performed more than 15,000 varicose vein laser procedures since being present at the first laser treatment in London at The Middlesex Hospital in 2000. He is one of the most experienced surgeons in the world in this operation.
He, along with Eddie, use the largest number of laser fibres in the UK.
He currently performs approximately 1000 EVLT operations per year on Varicose Veins.
He performs a similar number of cosmetic micro-sclerotherapy and foam-sclerotherapy treatments per year.
He is a master sclerotherapist in the treatment of cosmetic thread veins and uses veinwave for the treatment of facial thread veins.
He uses radiofrequency and ultrasound for varicose veins.
He entered full-time private practice in 2014 and currently practices in 5 hospitals and 7 clinics in the London and Kent regions.
He was one of the founding members of Sweeney Chaloner Surgical Chambers, and is the owner of Radiance Vein Clinics. With his friend Eddie Chaloner they became one of the first private practices that focused on varicose veins and minimally invasive treatments that could be done under local anaesthetic with minimal time off work.
He is married to Miss Karina Cox, the Consultant Onco-Plastic Breast Surgeon to Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospitals Trust.
Mr Sweeney went to School between the age of six and seventeen to Dublin’s St Mary’s College, a very well known school that has produced numerous international rugby players including Johnny Sexton. His enthusiasm for rugby was never matched with any great ability and the oblong ball was a convenient excuse for dropping a pass on numerous occasions. Luckily his hand–eye co-ordination improved as a surgeon!
He remains on the Specialist Register with the General Medical Council.
He practice if audited every year and he undergoes regular appraisal by the General Medical Council.
He is recognized by all medical insurers.
