What causes unstable elbows?

There are many potential causes of unstable elbows. However, common causes include suffering from osteoarthritis or suffering from an injury to the elbow. 

How does stabilisation of unstable elbows work?

The first stage in assessment involves examining the elbow with the patient under anaesthetic and with an x-ray. If this confirms elbow instability, then an operation is performed to replace the damaged ligament with either tissue from the triceps tendon or by using an artificial ligament. Postoperatively the patient is in a plaster slab for 2 weeks and then a hinged brace for 4 weeks.
