Rezum procedure

A minimally invasive procedure to treat an enlarged prostate

An Elderly Gentleman in His Doctors Office Receiving a Check-Up
The Rezum procedure is a minimally invasive treatment that uses steam to shrink an enlarged prostate, alleviating associated symptoms. It is used in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you don't need to stay overnight in hospital, and it takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.

If you're experiencing the difficult symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or weak urine flow, a private Rezum procedure may be the right treatment for you. If you're interested in learning more about the procedure, book a consultation with one of our experienced specialists. Call us or book online today and you could have your initial consultation within 48 hours.

If you're suffering from benign prostate enlargement, also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, there are a range of associated symptoms that can impact your quality of life. These can include:

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting urination
  • Weak urine flow
  • Incomplete bladder emptying
  • Urinary urgency
  • Urinary tract infections

What is benign prostate enlargement?

The Rezum procedure is primarily used to treat an enlarged prostate caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Sometimes referred to as benign prostate disease, this is a condition that causes your prostate to become enlarged. It is a non-cancerous condition that becomes more common as men get older.

BPH can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms, including frequent urination, difficulty urinating, and a weak urine stream. These symptoms can impact your quality of life and lead to complications such as bladder infections and urinary retention.

When you book an initial consultation to discuss the Rezum procedure at Circle Health Group, your consultant will first need to confirm a diagnosis of BPH, before analysing your individual circumstances and your particular presentation of symptoms to decide if this is the best treatment for you.

This process starts with a discussion of your symptoms and medical history, and your consultant may need to perform additional tests or scans to make an accurate diagnosis.

Once we understand your condition, we will explain the Rezum procedure in detail, including how it works and the expected benefits. Based on your individual needs and preferences, we will work with you to create a tailored treatment plan that addresses your symptoms and helps you achieve the best possible outcome.

We understand that this may be a new experience for you, and we want to make sure you are comfortable with the treatment plan. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have and voice any concerns. Your initial consultation is an important first step in your treatment journey, and we will be with you every step of the way.

During a Rezum procedure, the aim is to reduce the size of the prostate gland to improve urinary flow as well as the other symptoms associated with BPH. It typically takes around 10 to 20 minutes. However, the duration of the procedure may vary depending on the size of the prostate gland.

The Rezum procedure is performed under local anaesthetic. You will be awake but won't feel any pain during the procedure because we will numb the area that is going to be treated.

During the procedure, your consultant will insert a small device into your urethra, through which they will deliver thermal therapy directly to the prostate tissue. The device releases steam, which enters the prostate tissue, destroying the cells that cause the enlargement.

Once the procedure is completed, the steam will condense into water and the body will naturally absorb it. Over time, your body will reabsorb the destroyed tissue, shrinking your prostate and reducing your symptoms.

Recovering from Rezum

After the Rezum procedure, you may experience some discomfort or pain while urinating. This is normal and should subside within a few days. You may also experience some blood in your urine for a short period. It is important to rest for a few days after the procedure to allow your body to heal.

Your doctor will provide you with specific instructions for post-procedure care and recovery, and they'll give you a personalised estimate of your recovery timeline, from when you can drive again to when you can go back to work. Recovery is different for everyone, but they should be able to ive you a good guide.

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications involved with a Rezum procedure. These include:

  • Urinary symptoms: You may experience some discomfort and difficulty urinating after the procedure, which is generally temporary and lasts for a few days to a few weeks
  • Infection: There is a risk of infection after any surgical procedure. If appropriate, we’ll give you antibiotics to take home with you – or perhaps even before you have the procedure
  • Erectile Dysfunction: Erectile dysfunction can occur as a result of the procedure, but it is a rare complication
  • Retrograde ejaculation: Some men may experience retrograde ejaculation after the procedure, where the semen goes into the bladder instead of coming out of the penis during ejaculation
  • Hematuria: There is a risk of blood in the urine following the procedure. This usually clears up on its own within a few days
