Prostate cancer treatment using High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat prostate cancer.
HIFU uses overlapping ultrasound waves to create heat inside the prostate which destroys the tissue that has the prostate cancer in the prostate gland, it does this without damaging the healthy surrounding tissue, the nerves and important structures which control erectile function and urinary continence. It is painless, can be repeated if required, and does not require and overnight stay.
On the day of your treatment you'll be lain on your side on the examining bed. The treatment involves inserting a narrow lubricated ultrasound probe into your rectum.
This may cause some very slight discomfort but is not painful. The probe allows an image of your prostate to be sent to a monitoring screen. Your surgeon will then position the probe to ensure it focuses its high intensity beam of ultrasound only on to the affected tissue of the prostate gland leaving the healthy surrounding tissue untouched.
