An implantable ECG recorder is a small device that can be placed on the chest under the skin to continuously monitor the heart rhythm, (ECG) for periods of up to 3 years.
The recorder monitors the ECG all the time and can record snapshots of the rhythm automatically, or by activation using a patient activator communicating to the device through the skin.
Up to 80% of patients make a recording during symptoms in the first 6-12 months after an implant, which is far greater than the % of patients who have a conventional external recorder.
There is a 1% risk of infection of the implant, otherwise it is completely safe. Patients with an ECG loop recorder can have MRI scans.
