Living with extreme discomfort in your knee can be exhausting, especially when it is the result of long -term wear and tear or conditions, such as chronic pain and arthritis. While some people may experience mild symptoms and are able to manage them, others may suffer from severe chronic pain that can’t be managed by non-surgical treatments.

If you experience severe, unmanageable knee pain, a knee replacement may be the most appropriate next step to help restore function and return to the activities you enjoy.

This may include everyday actions, such as playing with your grandchildren, or moving more freely, such as walking upstairs without significant pain.

At Three Shires Hospital, we offer fast and easy access to a range of specialist orthopaedic consultants. Our team of specialists will take the time to thoroughly assess, diagnose, and treat your condition, supporting you on your journey back to your regular activities. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be in safe and experienced hands.

Whatever your concerns, we are here to support you at every stage of your care.

A knee replacement may be recommended if your knee joint has been significantly damaged and or other non-surgical treatments are no longer effective in managing your symptoms. This is most commonly due to conditions such as osteoarthritis, where the protective cartilage in the joint gradually wears away. This can lead to you experiencing symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.

You may be considered for a knee replacement if you experience persistent pain that affects your daily activities (such as difficulty walking or climbing stairs), a reduced range of movement in your knees, or swelling and stiffness that does not improve with physiotherapy, medication, or injections.

The aim of knee replacement surgery is to relieve pain, improve mobility, and enhance your quality of life by replacing the damaged surfaces of the knee joint with an artificial implant. Your consultant will assess your symptoms, imaging results, and overall health before discussing whether surgery is the most appropriate option for you.

At Three Shires Hospital, surgery is not always the first point of call. Non-invasive treatments such as injections or a course of physiotherapy are often explored first to avoid any unnecessary procedures.

Knee replacement surgery is typically considered when non-invasive treatment methods are proven to be ineffective.

Physiotherapy

A course of physiotherapy sessions may be recommended by your consultant prior to considering other non-invasive treatment options, such as knee injections. This is so your consultant can determine whether more holistic methods can help reduce symptoms and improve function first before recommending further medication or more invasive interventions.

At Three Shires Hospital, we have a dedicated team of physiotherapists and specialist physiotherapists who provide expert assessment, tailored treatment plans, and rehabilitation programmes designed to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery and long-term joint health.

Knee injections

Knee injections are a non-surgical treatment option used to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility in patients with a range of knee conditions, including osteoarthritis and soft tissue irritation. Injection treatment is often recommended if pain persists despite conservative treatments such as pain relief medication or physiotherapy.

The injection is administered directly into the knee joint by a trained clinician and may contain corticosteroids to reduce inflammation or other lubricating substances designed to improve joint function and comfort. The procedure is typically quick, minimally invasive, and performed as an outpatient treatment.

Many patients experience a reduction in pain and improved movement following treatment, allowing them to continue with physiotherapy and daily activities more comfortably. Knee injections may be used as part of a wider treatment plan tailored to individual needs.

If non-invasive treatments do not provide sufficient relief from discomfort and pain, your consultant may recommend a knee replacement as an alternative. Depending on the severity and complexity of your condition, a knee replacement may sometimes be recommended at an earlier stage.

Your consultant will always discuss all available treatment options with you and advise on the most suitable course of action based on your individual needs

The cost of knee replacement surgery will depend on the consultant you choose.

VELYS™ robotic-assisted technology is designed around your unique anatomy, supporting your surgeon with advanced precision during a knee replacement.

By combining expert surgical skill with real-time robotic guidance, it allows for highly accurate implant placement and personalised treatment planning. The robot itself does not perform the knee replacement surgery, because it cannot cut, implant, or stitch. It is a tool for alignment, helping your surgeon ensure that the alignment, sizing, and rotational positioning of your implant is correct throughout surgery.

This approach may lead to improved alignment, less disruption to surrounding tissue, and a smoother recovery compared to traditional methods. Using VELYS™ technology can help you on your journey to returning to your everyday activities with greater confidence.
