At Three Shires Hospital, surgery is not always the first point of call. Non-invasive treatments such as injections or a course of physiotherapy are often explored first to avoid any unnecessary procedures.
Knee replacement surgery is typically considered when non-invasive treatment methods are proven to be ineffective.
Physiotherapy
A course of physiotherapy sessions may be recommended by your consultant prior to considering other non-invasive treatment options, such as knee injections. This is so your consultant can determine whether more holistic methods can help reduce symptoms and improve function first before recommending further medication or more invasive interventions.
At Three Shires Hospital, we have a dedicated team of physiotherapists and specialist physiotherapists who provide expert assessment, tailored treatment plans, and rehabilitation programmes designed to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support recovery and long-term joint health.
Knee injections
Knee injections are a non-surgical treatment option used to help relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility in patients with a range of knee conditions, including osteoarthritis and soft tissue irritation. Injection treatment is often recommended if pain persists despite conservative treatments such as pain relief medication or physiotherapy.
The injection is administered directly into the knee joint by a trained clinician and may contain corticosteroids to reduce inflammation or other lubricating substances designed to improve joint function and comfort. The procedure is typically quick, minimally invasive, and performed as an outpatient treatment.
Many patients experience a reduction in pain and improved movement following treatment, allowing them to continue with physiotherapy and daily activities more comfortably. Knee injections may be used as part of a wider treatment plan tailored to individual needs.
If non-invasive treatments do not provide sufficient relief from discomfort and pain, your consultant may recommend a knee replacement as an alternative. Depending on the severity and complexity of your condition, a knee replacement may sometimes be recommended at an earlier stage.
Your consultant will always discuss all available treatment options with you and advise on the most suitable course of action based on your individual needs
