Are you concerned about the health of your heart?

According to The British Heart Foundation, more than 160,000 people die each year in the UK due to diseases of the heart and the circulatory system. Approximately 43,000 of those people are aged under 75.

The health of your heart directly affects your overall health, for example having uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to an array of further health complications.

You may choose to see a consultant cardiologist for several different reasons, and our team can help you get an accurate depiction of the health of your heart and your cardiovascular system. Our cardiology service is provided by well-established consultant cardiologists who will support you throughout the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of all common heart problems. Our team use a range of non-invasive cardiology investigations for patients with suspected and known heart problems to ensure the best quality of care.

It is important to be aware of the following symptoms which could indicate a problem with your heart. These symptoms can all be signs of many things, not just heart disease, but your consultant will confirm if you need any investigative tests.

  • Chest pains
  • High blood pressure
  • Low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Heart palpitations
  • Dizzy spells or fainting
  • Unexplained weakness or fatigue
  • Rapid or irregular pulse
  • Anxiety

Some of the most common heart conditions we manage at Thornbury Hospital include:

  • Angina
  • Heart attacks
  • Heart rhythm problems (arrhythmia)
  • Valve disease
  • Heart muscle problems
  • Heart failure
  • Heart disease risk factor management (hypertension, high cholesterol)

Some of the most common non-invasive cardiology procedures we offer include:

  • Ambulatory blood pressure recording: An ambulatory blood pressure recording device records your blood pressure over a period of 24 hours, whilst you carry out your usual activities. You may have also heard of it as ’24-hour blood pressure monitoring.’
  • Ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) test: An ambulatory electrocardiogram (ECG) test is when an electrocardiogram (ECG) test is done over a longer period of time in order to monitor your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity whilst you carry out your usual activities. This usually lasts between one and 14 days.
  • Echocardiogram: An echocardiogram is a painless ultrasound scan that looks inside your heart and the surrounding blood vessels. It is used to examine the structure of your heart and to check how it’s working.
  • Electrocardiogram (ECG): An electrocardiogram (ECG) test is a straightforward and pain-free test to check your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity.
  • Implantable loop recorder (ECG recorder): An implantable loop recorder is a device used to measure your heart’s activity. You may also have heard of it as an ‘implantable ECG recorder.’ The device is small and rectangular shaped, about the size of a small packet of chewing gum and works as an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor your heart’s rhythm and electrical activity.
  • Transoesophageal echocardiogram: A transoesophageal echocardiogram (TOE) is a non-invasive test that offers clear and accurate images of your heart in order to examine the structure of your heart and how it functions. It is performed by slowly inserting a probe down your throat. The probe is connected to a monitor that displays real-time images of the inside of your heart.

At Thornbury Hospital, your initial consultation will take place with a cardiology specialist of your choice, at a time and date to suit you. This consultation is an opportunity to discuss all the options available to you about your area of concern.

Your consultant will discuss your symptoms, along with suitable diagnostic investigations and treatment options, ensuring you are fully informed about these. They will also discuss your medical history, and any past procedures or investigations to create your tailored treatment plan.

We offer a directly accessible cardiology service for patients with suspected and known heart problems. This service is complemented by a range of non-invasive cardiology investigations. Using the close working relationship of the consultants and staff at Thornbury Hospital, patients with various types of heart conditions can be expertly managed.

All of our diagnostic cardiology investigations are interpreted and reported by our experienced team of consultant cardiologists, all of which have clinics throughout the week. Please note that the initial consultation and follow-up consultation fees are additional to any tests or procedures carried out.

Depending on the scan or test required, you may be able to have it on the same day as your initial consultation, but we would usually arrange it for a few days after your initial consultation at a day and time to suit you.
