Arthrosamid® is an innovative treatment for knee osteoarthritis, delivered through a series of injections directly into the knee joint, often performed using ultrasound guidance. The injections contain a non-biodegradable hydrogel, designed to cushion the joint, reduce pain, and improve mobility.

The hydrogel thickens the natural joint fluid (synovial fluid) and binds with surrounding tissue, creating a cushioning effect. This reduces friction, eases pain and improves movement. Because the hydrogel is non-degradable, it remains in the joint for years, offering longer-lasting relief as opposed to other injectable treatments.

To find out if Arthrosamid® is right for you, call us on 01305 263 252 or book online today to arrange a private consultation with one of our experienced specialists at Winterbourne Hospital.

Arthrosamid® offers a range of benefits that make it a compelling non-surgical option for managing knee osteoarthritis:

  • Long-lasting pain relief – Clinical studies show significant improvement as early as four weeks after injection, with effects lasting up to three years.
  • Minimally invasive – The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and typically takes less than 30 minutes.
  • Outpatient treatment – No hospital stay required; patients can go home the same day.
  • Safe and well-tolerated – Most side effects are mild and temporary, such as slight swelling or discomfort at the injection site.
  • Improved mobility and quality of life – Many patients report better joint function and reduced reliance on pain medication.
  • Delays or avoids surgery – For some, Arthrosamid® can postpone or even eliminate the need for knee replacement surgery.

Arthrosamid® is suitable for most adults living with knee osteoarthritis, especially those who:

  • Experience moderate to severe symptoms
  • Have not responded to other non-surgical treatments, such as lifestyle changes, medication, or physiotherapy
  • Are not ready or eligible for knee replacement surgery
  • Prefer a minimally invasive option with long-term benefits

It is also suitable for older patients who might not be eligible for knee replacement surgery due to health reasons.

However, it may not be suitable for individuals with active infections, bleeding disorders, pregnancies, or those currently taking anticoagulant medication. Your consultant at The Winterbourne Hospital will carefully review your medical history to determine if Arthrosamid® is the right option for you.

Arthrosamid® is administered in a simple, one-step procedure by a qualified Orthopaedic Consultant. The process includes:

  • Local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area.
  • The knee is cleaned and prepared for injection.
  • Using ultrasound guidance, the hydrogel is injected directly into the joint space.
  •  A small dressing is applied, and patients are typically able to walk out shortly after.
  • The procedure itself takes around 15 to 20 minutes.

Once inside the joint, the hydrogel integrates with the synovial lining, enhancing the viscosity of the synovial fluid. This acts like a shock absorber, reducing friction between bones and cushioning the joint. Over time, this helps to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and restore mobility.

Clinical trials have shown that Arthrosamid® not only improves symptoms but also maintains these improvements over the long term. In a three-year prospective study, patients experienced sustained reductions in pain and stiffness, with no degradation of the hydrogel.

After your procedure

  • Arthrosamid® is a day-case treatment, so you can go home shortly after your appointment. You may experience mild discomfort or swelling once the anaesthetic wears off, but this usually settles within a few days. Simple pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, can help if needed.
  • You can return to most normal activities straight away, but it’s best to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days.
  • We recommend not driving for 24 hours, so please arrange transport home.
  • You can return to work when you feel ready.

At The Winterbourne Hospital, Arthrosamid® is available on a self-pay basis. The cost of Arthrosamid® injections starts from £2,995*, which includes the injection and associated care. An initial consultation with one of our specialist Orthopaedic Consultants is required to assess your suitability for the treatment.

*This is a starting price specifically for The Winterbourne Hospital. The exact price will vary based on factors including your medical history and your choice of consultant.
