Urology is the medical specialty focused on diagnosing, treating and managing conditions affecting the urinary tract, including your kidneys, bladder, urethra, and adrenal glands. The urinary tract acts as a filter for the blood. It works by removing waste products and excess fluid from the blood and expels them from the body in the form of urine.

Urology also focuses on conditions affecting the male reproductive system. This system comprises of parts specific to the male body, including the:

  • Penis
  • Epididymis
  • Ejaculatory ducts
  • Prostate
  • Scrotum
  • Testicles

If any part of the urinary tract or male reproductive system cannot function correctly, it can cause health problems that can affect fertility as well as other bodily functions.

What is a urology specialist?

A urologist is a doctor specialising in conditions that affect the urinary and reproductive systems in adults and children.

They are qualified to recommend and perform treatment, including medication and surgical procedures. Some urologists choose to practice without performing surgery, but all urologists are given surgical training.

Urologists can also choose to specifically focus on developing their knowledge and skills in certain areas of urology. This can include paediatric urology, urologic oncology, male infertility, neuro-urology, and reconstructive urology.

The cost of your initial consultation starts at about £200, and the cost of urology treatment will depend on various factors, from your symptoms and condition to the consultant you choose. At the time of your appointment, your consultant will discuss all options with you and ensure all your questions are answered.

Our flexible payment options help you spread the cost of your payment across a time period that suits you.

Your diagnostics and treatment may be covered by your private health insurance, but not always. Speak to your insurance provider directly to enquire what is included in your policy.

You may need urology treatment for a number of reasons, as urology covers quite a wide range of conditions.

Generally, urologist will treat the following conditions, which can affect both men and women:

For many urinary conditions, symptoms can be treated effectively using non-surgical methods, including:

Lifestyle changes

Making changes to your daily habits and lifestyle, such as cutting down on caffeine and alcohol, keeping hydrated and exercising regularly, may help ease urological symptoms and prevent further complications going forward.

Pelvic floor exercises

Pelvic floor muscle exercises and/or bladder training can help with improving incontinence. This is because you are working towards strengthening the surrounding muscles which help support your urological system.

Medication

Certain medicines such as antibiotics can be helpful when treating recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), stress incontinence, erectile dysfunction, or benign prostate enlargement (also referred to as benign prostatic hyperplasia/BPH).

If non-surgical treatments cannot relieve your symptoms or effectively treat your condition, surgery may be advised. There are many surgical treatment options available to help treat urological concerns, including:

Cystoscopy

This procedure is often used to examine the urethra and bladder for any abnormalities, such as a stone, a growth, a narrowing, or a blockage.

Keyhole surgery (laparoscopy)

Many types of surgery within the urinary tract can be carried out with laparoscopy. This is because this approach requires only small incisions in the skin, meaning bleeding and pain is reduced, scarring is less visible, and recovery is often faster than for traditional ‘open’ surgery.

Transurethral resection of a bladder tumour (TURBT)

If cancer is found in your bladder, this procedure can be performed to establish the type of tumour present and superficial tumours (close to the tissue’s surface) can often be removed.

Other cancer treatment that may be recommended for kidney, prostate, bladder, testicular, penile, ureters, or urethra cancer include:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiotherapy
  • Trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP)
  • Radical prostatectomy
  • Orchidectomy (complete removal of the testicles)

If a referral to specialist oncology team is necessary, your consultant will arrange this for you immediately.

Other surgical procedures we offer

For issues affecting the male reproductive system, surgical options include:

  • Orchiopexy
  • Varicocelectomy
  • Transurethral Resection of the Ejaculatory Duct (TURED)
  • Vasectomy
  • Vasectomy reversal
  • Circumcision
  • Circumcision revision

During your initial consultation, your consultant will discuss your symptoms, medical history and family history, and your lifestyle habits. They will want to know details like:

  • What symptoms do you have?
  • When did these symptoms start?
  • Have they been getting worse?
  • Do you have any pain? If so, can you describe it?
  • Have you received any treatment already?
  • Do you have any underlying health conditions?

Once your consultant has assessed this information, they may ask to perform a physical examination to rule out potential conditions. This can include assessing areas such as your abdomen, genitals, and lymph nodes.

If your consultant suspects you may have a concern that needs further investigation, they may recommend you have additional diagnostic tests. Further examinations can include a flow rate test, blood tests, a flexible cystoscopy, and scans, such as ultrasound, video urodynamics, or an MRI. These can easily be arranged for you onsite, if required. (CT scans can be arranged by your consultant, but this will be performed offsite. The results will be sent to your consultant directly.)

Once a diagnosis has been made, your consultant will discuss suitable treatment options with you. If you have any questions or concerns, they will be happy to talk them through with you. You will always have the information you need to make an informed choice about treatment.

If anything is found that requires referral to another specialist, this is easily arranged for you onsite.

How long does a urology appointment take?

The total time of your appointment will vary, especially if immediate tests or complex discussions about your condition or treatment are needed.

Typically, your initial consultation will generally last about 30 minutes. During which your consultant will discuss your medical history, perform a physical exam (if necessary), and plan your next steps.
