Hip surgery can help give you back movement that's free of pain and stiffness

Our hips aid us each and every day, movements such as getting out of bed, walking up and down stairs or getting into and out of a car are taken for granted whilst we are fit and healthy. Only when we develop any kind of problem it can have a significant impact on our quality of life, and often surprisingly quickly.

When any pain and/or stiffness is mild, it can be easy to dismiss these symptoms as a natural part of the ageing process.

More significant symptoms may start to affect your mobility and stop you from doing the things you enjoy. In these cases, you may like to consult with an expert in managing and restoring hip health.

  • Our Orthopaedic hip consultants are able to request a range of diagnostic techniques to complement their expert clinical assessment, to ensure the best options are taken at every stage of your injury process.

Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeons

*Please note, not all consultants see patients under the age of 18.

  • The diagnostic imaging department is supported by our radiology consultants who provide additional expertise where more specialist diagnostics are needed or where more detailed radiology reporting is required.
  • Our holistic approach to hip surgery means that our patients are fully supported pre- and post-operation by our musculoskeletal physiotherapy department. The close working relationship ensures that patients are back up on their feet as quickly as possible with most patients staying in hospital as little as one / two nights.

Your hip is formed by your thigh-bone (femur) and pelvis. The upper part of your thigh-bone (head of femur) sits inside a shallow cup-like area of your pelvis known as the acetabulum. This ‘ball and socket’ joint gives your hip excellent mobility and strength.

Unfortunately, the hip joint can be damaged by injury or disease, leading to nasty pain and stiffness in the hip.

When non-surgical treatments aren’t able to provide adequate symptom relief, you may require hip surgery. There are a number of different operations available, including:

  • Total hip replacement surgery
  • Revision hip replacement surgery
  • Hip arthroscopy

As the name suggests, total hip replacement surgery replaces the damaged hip joint with a new artificial one (known as a prosthesis). This is usually needed when osteoarthritis in the hip has caused such degeneration in the joint that pain and stiffness are having a marked effect on your life.

Surgery will not always be required to treat hip pain and it is often a pleasant surprise to many of our patients to discover that their symptoms can be well managed without the need for invasive surgery.

Occasionally, somebody may need a form of keyhole surgery known as hip arthroscopy to help diagnose their problem. A thin, flexible tube with a tiny camera and light is passed through a small cut in your hip. This transmits a live feed to a screen, giving you consultant a clear view inside the joint. If they discover any issues, such as an impingement or labral tear, these can often be corrected as part of the arthroscopy.

Depending on the specific problem with your hip, your consultant may advise joint preservation techniques, to help protect and maintain the function in your hip in order to delay the need for more major surgery. Your consultant will be able to discuss suitable options with you.

If the damage to your hip joint is more extensive, total hip replacement surgery may be advised to get you out of pain and restore mobility.

Whatever the extent of your hip pain and stiffness, your consultant will ensure you receive the optimal treatment to effectively manage your symptoms and to get you out of pain.

When you first meet with your consultant here at Saxon Clinic, they’ll take a medical history and talk about your symptoms. They’ll ask you a number of questions to help narrow potential causes down. These may be questions like:

  • How long have you had hip pain?
  • Do you have any other symptoms?
  • What activities or movements make your symptoms worse?
  • Have your symptoms been getting worse?
  • Where in the hip is your pain and what does it feel like?

They will perform a physical examination of your hip, as well as your back and knee because pain in the hip can sometimes be referred from a problem in them.

Further diagnostic tests may be needed, and these can all be easily arranged for you here on-site. Our on-site imaging facilities include X-ray, MRI and ultrasound.

Once a diagnosis has been made, your consultant will talk about the results and discuss suitable treatment options with you.

Should hip surgery be deemed appropriate, this will be arranged for you as soon as possible. The hip implants used at Saxon Clinic are state-of-the-art and custom fitted to your specific requirements to ensure your new joint gives you the benefits you expect.

If you have pain in your hip, you may not need hip surgery. Non-surgical treatments are often able to successfully relieve pain dependant on the problem, and can delay the need for hip surgery. These treatments include:

Should these treatments not work, or they stop being as effective, hip surgery may be needed to get you out of pain.

Hip replacement surgery removes the damaged, worn joint with a new artificial one, called a prosthesis. This new hip joint is able to move freely and without causing pain.

Hip replacement surgery may also be needed for other reasons, including rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis (the death of bone tissue due to its blood supply being cut off) or a fracture of the hip.
