From getting out of bed first thing in the morning to walking, sitting and standing throughout the day, we use our feet and ankles countless times every day.

When our feet and ankles are working properly, we rarely notice or even think about them. On the other hand, if anything goes wrong with them - either through either injury or disease - we can suddenly find ourselves struggling to do ordinary and simple activities.

If you’re struggling with a problem in a foot or ankle, you’ll know first-hand just how much it can affect every part of your life. Whether it’s stopping you from taking part in your favourite sport, limiting the amount you can walk or even keeping you awake at night, long-term or severe pain or stiffness in a foot or ankle can have a big impact on your physical, mental and emotional health.

When your pain gets bad enough to see a doctor, you’ll want to get an accurate diagnosis and the best care and treatment possible without unnecessary delay.

Here at The Saxon Clinic, we’ve been treating people’s foot and ankle problems for nearly 40 years.

We love helping to get people out of any pain and stiffness they have, so that they can get back to enjoying the activities they love.

Your ability to balance, stand and move all rely on your feet and ankles working properly.

Your two feet together contain one quarter of the bones in your entire body. Given the large number of bones involved, it’s easy to see the potential consequences of any damage to them.

The ligaments, muscles, nerves and other structures and tissues in the feet and ankles also all have the potential to be damaged.

So why do people come to see us for help? Some of the more common problems we treat at The Saxon Clinic are:

  • Pain in the ankle or foot,
  • Bunion: a bony lump at the base of your big toe,
  • Ganglion cyst: a fluid-filled lump in the foot,
  • Sports injuries: ranging from a sprain or ligament or tendon tear through to a fracture,
  • Toe problems: this could be anything from a recurrent blister to a significant deformity in the toe itself,
  • Plantar fasciitis: characterized by pain in your heel or the bottom of your foot.

Whether you’re an athlete at the peak of your career suddenly faced with a serious foot or ankle injury or a non-athlete struggling with chronic arthritis, you’ll want to be assured of fast, effective treatment.

Once a diagnosis has been made, treatment options can be discussed and arranged.

When you first meet with your doctor here at The Saxon Clinic, they’ll talk with you about the problem you’re having with your foot or ankle. They’ll want to know things like:

  • How long you’ve had the problem,
  • If you have pain, the type of pain it is (for example, is it dull or sharp, localised or spread throughout the foot/ankle, constant or intermittent?),
  • Whether it’s been getting worse over time.

They’ll examine your foot and ankle, moving it into different positions in order to see the degree of movement and flexibility you currently have. This examination helps them to assess the degree of any pain and/or stiffness in the joints and to see how it could be affecting your mobility.

If any more tests are needed to help with your diagnosis, they can be carried out here at The Saxon Clinic. Our imaging facilities including X-rayMRI and ultrasound, so we’re able to arrange any of these quickly and easily.

If your foot or ankle is affected by an injury or disease, it can make walking and standing difficult, sometimes painful. For more serious damage, you may not even be able to weight-bear, only able to move about with great difficulty or by using a walking aid like crutches.

Not all causes of knee pain will require surgery. There are good non-surgical treatments available that can be very effective in treating some common foot and ankle problems. Non-surgical treatments include:

  • Trying to rest the foot and ankle as much as possible,
  • Pain relief medication. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you’re not sure what to use or have any questions.
  • Using a cold compress throughout the day may help to relieve your symptoms.
  • Physiotherapy can be helpful when you need to stabilise and strengthen the ankle joint or foot, either before or after surgery.

If non-surgical treatments don’t give you the relief you need, you may need surgery to treat the problem.

There are a number of surgical options for the foot and ankle, from a type of keyhole surgery known as arthroscopy through to “open” surgery used to repair a nasty fracture.

Your doctor will talk you through everything clearly so that you have the information you need to make an informed decision about whether to have surgery or not.
