Minimally invasive surgery for urinary tract problems in Nottingham.
This minimally invasive procedure is used to treat ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction, which is caused by a blockage where your ureter and kidney meet.
Your ureter is a muscular tube that carries urine away from your kidneys to your bladder. UPJ results in a decreased flow of urine through your ureter and an increase of fluid pressure inside your kidneys. This can cause damage to your kidneys over time.

During surgery, your consultant will remove the blocked or narrowed portion of your ureter with specialist instruments. This surgery is performed through a small incision in your lower abdomen.
Your consultant will insert a piece of equipment called a laparoscope, which is a thin tube with a camera and light attached to the end of it, to access the inside of your abdomen and perform the procedure. They will look at a monitor that is connected to the laparoscope to guide them through the surgery.
The procedure will eliminate the symptoms of UPJ, helping you get back to your everyday life without pain and discomfort.
Our specialist consultants can perform this procedure using robotic technology at The Park Hospital in Nottingham.
This is an even more minimally invasive procedure than laparoscopic surgery, using very small incisions. Healing from a surgery of any kind can be a challenging experience both physically and emotionally. Your recovery from a laparoscopic unilateral pyeloplasty can be up to six weeks. With robotic surgery, you will experience less pain and discomfort after surgery because the procedure is less invasive with smaller incisions.
This can help you regain mobility sooner and be more comfortable throughout your recovery period at home. You will experience less abdominal pain and have the freedom to return to your normal activities sooner.
The da Vinci equipment facilitates minute movements and a highly enhanced view of inside your body. This allows your surgeon to perform the minimally invasive surgery with 10x the visual clarity than traditional surgery.
The robot is made up of several robotic arms. Your consultant will sit at a console, or control centre, near your hospital bed. The robot translates every movement your consultant makes in real time, bending and turning specialist instruments that move just like a human hand, but with a more expansive range of precision and smoother motion.
Your surgeon can use the da Vinci technology to make minute incisions, reducing the risk of scarring and ensuring you experience excellent outcomes and long-lasting results.
