Robotic-assisted myomectomy in Nottingham

Minimally invasive surgery to remove uterine fibroids in a Nottingham hospital

Myomectomy-laparoscopic-to-remove-fibroids

A myomectomy is a keyhole procedure to remove a uterine fibroid (also known as a myoma), which is a non-cancerous tumour that grows in your uterus.

The procedure is not suitable for all types of fibroids. Your gynaecologist can tell you whether it is the best treatment for you based on factors such as the size, number and position of your fibroid.

A myomectomy is a keyhole procedure, meaning it involves a small incision and is minimally invasive.

How is a myomectomy performed?

There are different ways to perform a myomectomy In an abdominal myomectomy, your consultant gynaecologist will make an incision in your abdomen (which may be around 12 cm or less). They will insert specialist instruments to remove the fibroids from the wall of your womb and from the outer layer of your womb. You will be under general anaesthetic for this procedure. During a laparoscopic myomectomy, your consultant will insert a laparoscope (a narrow tube with a fibre optic light at the end of it) into your womb through a tiny cut in your abdomen. Other small cuts are made in the same area to insert instruments that can dissect and remove the fibroids. This procedure can only be performed to remove small fibroids located just underneath the uterine lining (submucous fibroids). This is a minimally invasive approach with a fast recovery time.

Many people don’t have symptoms and may not know they have a uterine fibroid. If you do have symptoms, the most common ones are heavy or painful periods and pain in your abdomen. You might also experience a feeling of heaviness and fullness in your stomach.

Fibroids can impact your ability to get pregnant because they can block your fallopian tubes, which prevent the passage of sperm or an egg. This is not to say that you can’t get pregnant if you have uterine fibroids, it just might be more difficult to conceive if you don’t have treatment for your fibroids.

Other symptoms include:

  • Irregular bleeding in between periods
  • Swelling in lower abdomen
  • A feeling of pressure in the uterus
  • Needing to urinate more frequently than usual
  • Back ache
  • Constipation
  • Vaginal bleeding after sex

Any treatment plan will be guided by how many fibroids you have, how big they are, and where they are in your body.

You can have a myomectomy using advanced robotic technology at The Park. This offers an even more minimally invasive procedure than laparoscopic surgery and a faster recovery time. With a laparoscopic procedure, you can expect to recover within up to four weeks. With robotics, you can recover even sooner due to its significantly minimally invasive approach.

Circle Health Group have invested millions in our da Vinci robotic surgical system, helping your consultant to perform your myomectomy with more accuracy, and generally higher levels of dexterity than ever before.

What is the da Vinci X surgical system?

The da Vinci surgical system is a transformative piece of surgical equipment designed to help your consultant perform your procedure with extreme precision.

What does it look like?

The robot is made up of a series of mechanical arms, which are directly connected to a console controlled by your consultant. The robot arms move in sync with your consultant’s hand movements in real time, mimicking your consultant as they perform the surgery. Your consultant can see the inside of your body and see their hand movements carried out in real time through a high-definition, 3D real image provided by the technology. They can use the da Vinci robotic system to make smaller and more accurate movements than possible with their own hands, which is perfect for the ultimate accuracy and precision when performing intricate surgery like gallbladder removal surgery. It is important to know that your surgery is not performed by a robot. Your consultant is always in control of the procedure and the outcome, using the console to guide the robot and make minute, precise movements with the robotic arms.

A robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy starts from £9,700.
