Hip surgery in East London

Hip surgery can help give you back movement that's free of pain and stiffness

Hip problems can lead to a wide range of symptoms, often characterised by pain, stiffness and limited movement. Our leading hip specialists will quickly and accurately diagnose the problem and give you all the information you need to make the right decision on treatment and get back your quality of life. Patients who come to us are usually split between two groups:

Older patients often experience:

  • Groin pain (where the ball and socket joint are)
  • Stiffness and pain in the joints (which can be caused by osteoarthritis)
  • Increasing difficulty in doing daily activities
  • Increasingly limited ability to walk longer distances
  • Sleep disturbance

Younger patients, who often have sports-related injuries (particularly from running and contact sports), including:

  • Acute injuries (i.e. a sudden injury)
  • Hip impingement (when something prevents the smooth, painless movement of the ball-and-socket joint, often accompanied by groin pain and clicking or clunking noises)
  • Inflammation due to over-exertion (e.g. gluteal tendonitis)

Whatever the cause of your symptoms, our hip consultants will help you understand what’s going on, why it’s happening, and the options available to you.

They will work hard to understand the full impact on you, both physically and mentally, as well as your needs and objectives, so they can tailor a treatment plan aimed at getting you back to full health.

If you are coming to us direct, we offer very competitively priced self-pay packages, along with payment plan options to help make private healthcare accessible and affordable for all.

When you visit our consultants you are assured quick access to leading specialists, as well as cutting-edge diagnostic equipment.

This ensures you receive the treatment that is most appropriate in your circumstances.

There are different levels of treatment, dependent on the severity of your condition:

  • Activity modification: your specialist will identify aggravating factors (often different kinds of levels of activity), as well as look at any lifestyle changes you can make to help with joint problems (including dietary, as well as smoking and drinking). Another common cause of hip issues can be low Vitamin D levels
  • Conservative Interventions: these range from pain killers, to physiotherapy and hydrotherapy that target muscles around the hip
  • Further medical options: injections of steroids and hyaluronic acid (synthetic joint fluid), platelet rich plasma (PRP) can be done by a surgeon or a radiologist using ultrasound guidance
  • Surgery: options range from minimally invasive implants (which can be custom made if a patient has an unusual anatomy) to total hip replacements, using modern approaches that leave minimal scarring

We put great emphasis on treating each patient as an individual and ensuring diagnosis and treatment takes into account every possible facet of your condition.

We use a multi-disciplinary approach to ensure you are treated as quickly, comprehensively, and effectively as possible. (This also allows your treatment to all take place in one location).

Dependent on the nature of your condition, your hip specialist may work in partnership with anaesthetists, rheumatologists, or spinal, vascular, or general surgeons.

This helps ensure the right problem is identified and treated (for example, leg pain can actually originate in the back).

You will always get a solution that is tailor made for your circumstances and we stay by your side throughout your patient journey. You can also be assured that you will see the same consultant throughout, ensuring continuity of care.

We put the patient experience at the heart of everything we do. From the first moment you come to us to the moment you are discharged, we aim to make the process as speedy, comfortable and reassuring as possible for you.

Whilst there is no ‘typical’ patient, you can expect to go through these steps:

Referral

We accept patients via referrals from GPs or health insurance providers, as well as private patients who simply book a consultation directly.

Consultation

You will meet a specialist at our modern, welcoming hospital.

Our consultant will talk to you for 20-30 minutes about your specific circumstances and needs. This gives us enough time to understand your concerns and medical history, helping ensure you receive the correct diagnosis.

Your specialist will establish what the problem is, the location of the pain and the severity of it, and any related conditions you might have.

They will also look carefully at the impact your symptoms are having on your daily life, as well as your expectations and goals with treatment.

Their examination may include gait and joint movement analysis, and they may suggest further investigations, such as X-ray, MRI or CT scans.

If further investigations are needed and a diagnosis and treatment plan cannot be created straightaway, they will see you in a follow-up consultation to discuss the results, at your convenience.

Treatment and after-care

As explained above there are numerous potential treatment paths, dependent on your condition.

Medication can be bought at our pharmacy on site and we also have an excellent team of physiotherapists to begin rehab as soon as is practicable for you.

If your consultant recommends surgery there is no need to decide about this on the spot; patients often go away to think about this and perhaps discuss it with their family.

Often hip surgeries are local or regional anaesthetic to allow for quick recovery and the ability to go quickly into physio.

You will also be seen by your consultant a few weeks after any operation to check on your progress.
