It is not common to be asleep for an endoscopy, however you will usually be sedated, so you’ll be very relaxed and drowsy, making you only semi-aware of what’s going on.
An endoscopy itself usually takes 30 minutes or less, however you should expect to spend longer than this in total, as there will be paperwork to fill in, you may need to wait for sedation or anaesthetic to take effect, and you’ll need to stay in hospital for a while afterwards so we can monitor you. Expect to be in hospital for between 2 and 4 hours.
The colonoscopy procedure itself usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes, though the exact duration depends on your anatomy, the complexity of the examination, and whether any biopsies or polyp removals are performed.

If you want to book directly into a endoscopy procedure, usually you will need a referral from a GP or other healthcare professional. Whether you are a private or NHS patient, your GP can refer you to our hospital to have your endoscopy. We will then send the results back to your GP.
If you are already a patient at Droitwich Spa Hospital and you need a endoscopy, your consultant will refer you to our endoscopy team to arrange the procedure.
