Colorectal surgery is a medical speciality concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the colon, rectum and anus.
A doctor specialising in colorectal surgery is called a consultant colorectal surgeon. These are physicians who have completed medical school and undergone extra specialist training in colorectal disease and its associated surgical procedures. You may need to see a colorectal surgeon if you have a condition affecting your lower bowel that requires surgery.
It is important that you seek advice from your GP and request a referral if you feel they may have a colorectal problem. The treatment may involve a team approach to treatment, including specialist colorectal nurses, dieticians and consultants.
For certain intestinal disorders, private colorectal surgery is the only treatment that will improve or relieve symptoms, such as:

At Droitwich Spa Hospital we also have a private endoscopy suite, where scope examinations are undertaken to diagnose certain conditions. Your private colorectal consultant will recommend the best course of private treatment for your disorder and help you improve your quality of life.
At Droitwich Spa we offer the following colorectal treatments:
How long colorectal surgery takes depends on what type of surgery you are having and your reasons for having it. A complex procedure could take 6 hours or more, while more routine or simple operations take 2 or less.
Your surgeon will give you an idea of the time your operation is expected to take and how long you should expect to be in the hospital before, during and after surgery.
Most people recover from colorectal surgery in 4-8 weeks, though for some it will take less time, and some more.
Recovery from surgery will be different for every person, and will also depend on which type of surgery you had and why. Your surgeon and care team will give you a detailed explanation of what you can expect from your recovery, and we’ll be there for you throughout to make sure everything is going as well as it should.
We’ll give you pain medication if you need it, we’ll show you how to care for your incisions, and before you leave our hospital we’ll make sure you’re up and walking, feeling ok, and ready to go home safely.
The cost of your surgery will depend on various factors, including the details of the procedure and which consultant you choose. We’ll give you a full itemised quote before you book.
