Private Paediatric Autism Assessment in Greenwich

Comprehensive autism assessments for children and young people aged 4 to 18 years

At Blackheath Hospital, we provide comprehensive autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessments for children and young people aged 4 to 18 years.

Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, processes information, and experiences the world around them. Every autistic child is unique, with their own individual strengths, interests, and support needs.

You may wish to seek an assessment if you have noticed differences in your child's communication, social interaction, behaviour, sensory responses, or development, or if concerns have been raised by a healthcare professional, school, or nursery.

An autism assessment helps to build a detailed understanding of your child's strengths and needs and determines whether they meet the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Our experienced multidisciplinary team (MDT) follows evidence-based clinical guidelines to deliver thorough, child-centred assessments in a supportive and welcoming environment. We work closely with families throughout the process, providing clear communication, compassionate care, and practical guidance every step of the way.

Our comprehensive autism assessment is carried out by an experienced multidisciplinary team and is designed to provide a detailed understanding of your child's development, strengths, and support needs.

The assessment includes:

  • An occupational therapy assessment to explore sensory processing, motor skills, and everyday functioning.
  • A speech and language therapy assessment to evaluate communication, language development, and social interaction skills.
  • An assessment by a consultant general and neurodevelopmental paediatrician.
  • A multidisciplinary team discussion, where clinicians review all assessment findings before reaching a diagnostic conclusion.
  • A comprehensive written report summarising the assessment findings and outcome.

Each individual assessment appointment is approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes in duration. Depending on your child's needs, the assessment process may involve more than one appointment

1. Self-referral

Parents and carers can contact our National Enquiry Centre directly on 0208 318 7722 to enquire about an assessment.

2. Clinical triage

Following completion of our Family Developmental History Questionnaire and Social Communication & Sensory Questionnaire, our multidisciplinary team will review the information provided to determine whether the assessment is appropriate and plan the next stages of the process.

3. Appointment confirmation

If your child is accepted for assessment, you will receive either:

  • A confirmed appointment date for assessment, or
  • Confirmation that your child has been placed on the waiting list, together with an estimated waiting time.

4. Assessment appointments

Your child will attend appointments with members of our multidisciplinary team. Some parts of the assessment may be completed with parents or carers present, whilst other elements may be undertaken directly with your child.

5. MDT review and outcome

Following completion of all assessments, the multidisciplinary team reviews all available information to determine whether your child meets the diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Where possible, the outcome will be discussed with you on the same day.

6. Written report

A comprehensive diagnostic report is prepared, reviewed, and approved by the multidisciplinary team and provided within 7 working days.

7. Sharing information

With your consent, a copy of the report will be shared with your GP to support ongoing care and any future healthcare discussions.

Our Paediatric Autism (ASD) Assessment is offered as a comprehensive multidisciplinary package to ensure your child receives a thorough evaluation from the appropriate specialists. Individual elements of the assessment cannot be booked separately.

Will my child automatically receive an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)?

No. An autism diagnosis does not automatically result in an EHCP. To apply for an EHCP in England, a request for an Education, Health and Care needs assessment must be made through your local authority.

Does this assessment cover other neurodevelopmental conditions?

The assessment is specifically designed to assess for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). If clinicians identify concerns about additional neurodevelopmental conditions during the assessment process, they will discuss these with you and advise on appropriate next steps.

How long does clinical triage take?

Clinical triage will take place within one week of receiving your completed Family Developmental History Questionnaire and Social Communication & Sensory Questionnaire.
