Rectal resection surgery might be performed if you have been diagnosed with rectal cancer. It is often used alongside other treatment options, including chemotherapy. The specific treatment undergone depends on the stage of rectal cancer you have. During the procedure, your consultant will remove the area of your rectum that has been affected by disease, such as a tumour.

A rectal resection surgery treats a variety of diseases that cause damage to your bowel, not just rectal cancer. Although rectal cancer can be life-threatening, it is a very curable disease if found early. Regular check-ups and colorectal cancer screenings are an important way of monitoring your overall health.

During the operation to remove a rectal tumour, your consultant general surgeon will remove your sigmoid colon, which is situated on the left side of your abdominal cavity (tummy), and the upper part of your rectum (the storage organ of your bowel).

This procedure not only removes the damaged area of your bowel containing disease, but it also removes the draining lymph glands from this part of your bowel. If your consultant thinks you might have cancer, this is sent to pathologists who will examine each part under the microscope to look for cancerous cells.

Rectal cancer commonly presents with symptoms such as rectal bleeding (often seen as blood in your poo), changes in your bowel habits like diarrhoea and constipation, and a persistent feeling of needing to go to the toilet.

Other symptoms might include unexplained weight loss, abdominal pain, and extreme fatigue. In some cases, the tumour in your rectum can make your stool appear narrow and thin. This can be a sign of many bowl problems, including IBS and some infections.

The da Vinci system makes it possible to perform surgery through a few very small incisions, no larger than your fingertip. With the da Vinci system, your surgeon sits at a console near you in the operating room. The console enables them to control a camera, as well as the tiny instruments used to perform your surgery with precision and accuracy.

The many benefits of having robotic-assisted surgery

As mentioned above, there are many advantages to robotic-assisted surgery. These include:

Enhanced mental wellbeing after surgery

Robotic surgery not only enhances your physical healing process, but also helps improve and protect your mental wellbeing after surgery. This is because you can get back doing the things you love sooner and feel a little more comfortable in body and mind faster than with traditional surgery.

There are many aspects of life you can return to more swiftly, including daily activities, work, sex, and general exercise.

The smaller incisions used during surgery also leave smaller, less visible scarring, which can help boost your confidence and overall wellbeing if you are concerned about the appearance of scarring after surgery.

Robotics allows your surgeon to perform surgery with a less invasive approach, which reduces the amount of stress put on your body. This can result in less pain and discomfort after surgery and have a positive impact on your mental state, as well as your physical.

Far better precision and accuracy from your consultant

Robotic-assisted surgery allows your consultant to operate with greater precision and control than traditional methods. They also have a better view of inside your body, which can help them perform smaller movements with a smoother, more precise approach.

Less pain and discomfort after surgery

Recovering from surgery involves a tailored pain management plan, which can deeply impact your everyday life in the days following your surgery.

Robotics-assisted surgery can reduce your pain levels because it is generally less invasive.
