Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat endometriosis, a common gynaecological condition that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of your uterus grows outside of your womb.

During the procedure, your consultant will insert a small camera (called a laparoscope) through tiny incisions in your abdomen to view your internal organs.

Preserving surrounding tissue during surgery

Extreme accuracy and precision are essential during the surgical excision of endometriosis to preserve your surrounding healthy tissue. Endometriosis often develops in highly sensitive areas such as your ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, and bladder. Your consultant will use exceptionally precise surgical techniques to preserve the surrounding organs and tissue to minimise such as bleeding and injury. This preserves your normal organ function and sometimes even your fertility. It can also reduce the likelihood of endometriosis recurring.

With da Vinci robotic technology, which we explore in more detail below, your consultant can perform surgery with increased levels of precision and accuracy to preserve as much surrounding tissue as possible.

“The da Vinci is a huge advancement in robotic technology and used across so many specialties. It helps with surgery for endometriosis because it allows for highly precise, immersive surgery. This means I can perform operations with extreme precision using advanced, 3D technology and minimally invasive instruments for smaller incisions. The benefit is that the system enhances your recovery and reduces post-operative pain, which means a quicker return to normal activities.” Mr Suku George, consultant gynaecologist at The Alexandra Hospital

Using specialised instruments, your consultant will carefully identify and remove the endometrial tissue growths in your womb, aiming to preserve healthy tissue. This surgery should help to relieve symptoms like chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and painful periods. This approach is highly effective for treating endometriosis because it directly removes the tissue, often providing long-term relief and improving your quality of life.

Endometriosis typically presents with several common symptoms, including intense pelvic pain, heavy or irregular menstrual cycles, discomfort during sexual activity, and pain while urinating or during bowel movements, especially during menstruation. Many women also experience fertility issues and struggle to get pregnant. Although endometriosis can impact your fertility, it is still possible to get pregnant with the condition.

A laparoscopy is the only definitive method for diagnosing endometriosis, though the process can be lengthy—sometimes taking up to ten years—due to its symptoms that often overlap with other conditions like uterine fibroids or adenomyosis.

Other common conditions, such as uterine fibroids or adenomyosis, that cause these symptoms also need to be ruled out. A specialist gynaecologist will work closely with you to assess your symptoms, ensure proper testing, and provide the diagnosis and treatment you need.

At The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester, we offer this procedure with a robotic approach. There are many benefits to this, but the main one is that robotic-assisted surgery allows your consultant to be as minimally invasive as possible, which can reduce your pain and discomfort after surgery and help you recover from surgery much sooner.

We understand that recovering from surgery for endometriosis is a healing journey, both in body and mind. With robotic-assisted surgery, you can heal sooner with less physical pain and discomfort from the minute you come out of surgery. Get back to work, exercise, seeing friends and family, and simply embracing your everyday routine at a faster pace than with traditional surgery.

The Da Vinci robotic surgical system

Our consultant gynaecologists are highly versed in using the Da Vinci robotic surgical system to perform a laparoscopic excision of endometriosis. We understand the prospect of having robotics-assisted surgery can be daunting, which is why it helps to know what to expect ahead of surgery.

During robotic surgery, your surgeon is the one performing the procedure, while the robot is there to enhance their technique. Although robotic technology is involved, your surgery is not performed by a robot. Rather, your consultant controls the advanced surgical system to make your surgery as smooth and seamless as possible. For this procedure, your consultant sits at a console next to you and operates using tiny incisions and specialist instruments to perform the surgery. The robot, which comprises of several mechanical arms that connect to a console, moves as your consultant moves. Every hand movement your surgeon makes is translated by the da Vinci system in real time to bend and rotate the instruments with the highest levels of precision and care. The system has a built-in tremor-filtration to help your consultant guide each movement with extreme precision.

“The da Vinci helps with visualisation and the accurate removal of endometriosis. It results in less pain after surgery and patients can event go home on the same day. We take a very holistic approach to treatment for complex endometriosis, including a combination of surgery, pelvic floor physiotherapy and specialist pain management." Dr Sujata Gupta, consultant gynaecologist

Robotic-assisted surgery provides several key benefits, outlined below.

Advanced technology guided by the people in the know

Robotic-assisted surgery merges the advanced skills of our surgeons with state-of-the-art surgical technology. This combination allows for more complex procedures to be performed more effectively. You can take advantage of the latest advancements in medical technology, leading to better outcomes and a lower risk of complications.

The robotic unit offers enhanced precision, flexibility, and control, allowing for smaller, more precise incisions compared to traditional open surgery.

This minimally invasive approach often results in less pain, reduced blood loss, and a lower risk of complications. In less time, you can get back to:

  • Being in the comfort of your own home
  • Work
  • Being active and enjoying regular movement
  • Embracing your everyday routine
  • Seeing friends and family
  • Feeling physically comfortable
  • Feeling emotionally at ease

Robotic surgery also typically leads to faster recovery times, shorter hospital stays, and minimal scarring, helping you return get back to the things that make you happy, like exercise and an everyday routine. If scarring is something you are worried about, robotic surgery uses smaller cuts, resulting in smaller, far less visible scars. The advanced technology also gives your consultant a high-definition, 3D view of the surgical area, improving the overall accuracy of complex procedures and leading to long-lasting results.

This procedure at The Alexandra Hospital starts from £11,372.
