Laparoscopic excision of endometriosis is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat endometriosis, a common gynaecological condition that occurs when tissue similar to the lining of your uterus grows outside of your womb.
During the procedure, your consultant will insert a small camera (called a laparoscope) through tiny incisions in your abdomen to view your internal organs.
Preserving surrounding tissue during surgery
Extreme accuracy and precision are essential during the surgical excision of endometriosis to preserve your surrounding healthy tissue. Endometriosis often develops in highly sensitive areas such as your ovaries, fallopian tubes, bowel, and bladder. Your consultant will use exceptionally precise surgical techniques to preserve the surrounding organs and tissue to minimise such as bleeding and injury. This preserves your normal organ function and sometimes even your fertility. It can also reduce the likelihood of endometriosis recurring.
With da Vinci robotic technology, which we explore in more detail below, your consultant can perform surgery with increased levels of precision and accuracy to preserve as much surrounding tissue as possible.
“The da Vinci is a huge advancement in robotic technology and used across so many specialties. It helps with surgery for endometriosis because it allows for highly precise, immersive surgery. This means I can perform operations with extreme precision using advanced, 3D technology and minimally invasive instruments for smaller incisions. The benefit is that the system enhances your recovery and reduces post-operative pain, which means a quicker return to normal activities.” Mr Suku George, consultant gynaecologist at The Alexandra Hospital

Using specialised instruments, your consultant will carefully identify and remove the endometrial tissue growths in your womb, aiming to preserve healthy tissue. This surgery should help to relieve symptoms like chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and painful periods.
This approach is highly effective for treating endometriosis because it directly removes the tissue, often providing long-term relief and improving your quality of life.
