Our network of dedicated Orthopaedic Consultants deliver a range of hip surgeries to improve your hip mobility and function.
Hip problems can be caused by trauma, disease or degenerative "wear and tear". The two most common symptoms people battling this condition might experience are pain and stiffness in the hip. Any problem with your hip has the potential to limit your ability to do the things you love. In turn, this can significantly impact your daily life, taking a toll on your physical and emotional wellbeing.
At The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester, our network of dedicated Orthopaedic Surgeons have years of experience treating debilitating hip pain and helping people like you regain movement and function once more.
We do not just serve Manchester though. If you live in any of regions around Greater Manchester including Stockport, Cheshire East, Trafford, or Tameside, or even further afield, The Alexandra Hospital is here to serve you.
Whatever the cause, surgery can effectively treat hip pain and improve your mobility and function.
Physiotherapy, pain relief medication and hip joint injections can all be helpful in many cases including where the hip joint is damaged more extensively. However, it is still important to note that where a patient is suffering from advanced osteoarthritis, these treatments tend to only have a limited effect.
The most common operation is a full hip replacement, which involves removing the damaged hip joint and replacing it with a new artificial one (called a prosthesis).
Some symptoms and conditions can benefit from joint preservation treatment, which helps protect hip function and may delay the need for further invasive surgery.
If you are in pain and have previously had a total hip replacement, you may need a revision hip replacement to replace your prosthesis, in which case a call to our reception at The Alexandra Hospital will, in most cases, get you seen very quickly.
For certain hip conditions, a hip arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) may be carried out to investigate and repair any damage to your hip. During this procedure, a thin, flexible tube with a small camera and light attached to it is passed through a small cut in the hip area. The camera transmits a live feed to a screen, which helps your consultant investigate the cause of your pain.
In cases where you need a hip replacement or other form of hip surgery, your damaged joint will be replaced with an artificial implant. The implants used at The Alexandra are fitted to your specific requirements. All operations are monitored by the National Joint Registry.
We are also delighted to offer our private patients MAKO Robotic-Arm Assisted Hip Surgery. This has shown many benefits, including more accurate placement and alignment of the implant and a decreased likelihood of hip dislocation in the future. If this is of interest to you, your consultant will be happy to discuss it further.
Whatever the severity of your hip pain, your Consultant will ensure you receive the optimal treatment to effectively manage your symptoms.
They will also carry out a physical examination of your hip, as well as your back and knee. This is because hip pain can sometimes be caused by problems in those areas.
Additional diagnostic tests may be needed, which can all be arranged for you at The Alexandra. Our on-site imaging facilities here in Manchester include X-ray, CT, MRI, and ultrasound, allowing for comprehensive diagnostic capabilities.
After a diagnosis has been made, your consultant will discuss the results with you, outline treatments and explain the benefits you could expect from each.
All costs associated with your treatment at The Alexandra Hospital in Manchester will be explained in detail with you during your consultation
Whether you live in or around Manchester and the Greater Manchester area, or will be travelling from further afield, benefits of choosing The Alexandra in Manchester include:
Your consultant will thoroughly investigate the cause(s) of your hip pain and talk you through suitable treatment options. If hip surgery is needed, they will arrange for that to be carried out here at The Alexandra Hospital at the earliest opportunity.
