There are several reasons why you might be advised to have orthopaedic surgery. These include:
Osteoarthritis
This occurs when your cartilage (the tissue on the surface of your joints) breaks down. As a result, the bones in your joint might rub together, causing pain, swelling and stiffness.
Rheumatoid arthritis
This is a form of arthritis caused by your immune system attacking the cells in the lining of your joints. If left untreated, it can cause your joint to lose shape and alignment. It can also result in pain and swelling.
Compressed nerves in your spine (spinal problems)
If the nerves in your spine are compressed, you might experience pain in your back or in your leg.
Injuries
An injury can occur following a traumatic accident. A sprain, which happens when one or more of your ligaments have been torn or stretched, is a common sports injury. Other injuries include strains (tears in your muscle tissue) or fractures (broken bones).
