Fitness to Fly in Manchester

Expert care for your fitness to fly assessment

Certain patients with respiratory conditions such as asthma, COPD, and lung fibrosis may need extra oxygen while flying. The aim of the investigation is to simulate the conditions that your lungs will be exposed to whilst flying and to assesses whether you require supplementary oxygen onboard the aircraft.

For some patients the outcome of the test may mean that you are advised not to travel due to the drop in cabin air pressure causing a significant drop in blood oxygen levels which cannot be corrected by additional onboard oxygen.

You will be asked to wear a mask to simulate the aircraft cabin environment for 20 minutes. At the same time a probe is fitted to the finger to measure blood oxygen levels. If needed, additional oxygen may be given for a further 20 minutes to try to correct the blood oxygen to a safe level.

If supplementary oxygen is required, it is your responsibility to notify the airline or travel agent well in advance, using a MEDIF form. Your consultant will be able to provide written confirmation detailing the need for supplementary oxygen and the flow rate at which it needs to be delivered.

Some airlines do charge for supplemental oxygen, so you are advised to check fees with the airline.

It is essential that you take all medications, such as inhalers, in your cabin baggage and that travel plans are discussed with a physician familiar with your medical history.
