Early-stage glaucoma often has no noticeable symptoms. Gradual loss of peripheral vision is typically the first sign, but by the time symptoms appear, irreversible damage may have occurred.
Advanced symptoms of glaucoma
As glaucoma progresses, patients may experience significant irreversible vision loss. In some cases, patients can present with sudden severe eye pain, halos around lights, blurred vision and nausea. Immediate medical attention is necessary if these symptoms occur.
Angle-Closure glaucoma: Angle-closure glaucoma can present gradually (chronic angle-closure glaucoma) or suddenly (acute angle-closure glaucoma). Angle-closure glaucoma is less common than open-angle glaucoma, but can lead to rapid vision loss. Symptoms include severe eye pain, blurred vision, and nausea. This is a medical emergency and requires immediate treatment.
Normal-Tension glaucoma: Normal-tension glaucoma occurs even when intraocular pressure is within the normal range. It is believed to be related to optic nerve damage due to a combination of eye pressure and other factors. Careful monitoring is essential. Despite having a normal eye pressure, the most effective treatment for patients with normal-tension glaucoma is still aimed at reducing eye pressure.
Secondary glaucoma: These forms of glaucoma result from other eye conditions or injuries, such as cataracts, diabetes, or eye inflammation. Treatment focuses on managing the underlying cause and lowering eye pressure.
Prescription eye drops are often the first line of treatment to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) by either decreasing fluid production in the eye or improving fluid drainage.
Laser treatment
Laser treatments, such as Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), are minimally invasive and help increase fluid drainage, reducing IOP. This treatment is available at Southend Private Hospital for qualifying patients. Recent research has shown that for most patients this is the best initial treatment for open-angle glaucoma.
Surgical options
For advanced cases, surgical procedures like trabeculectomy or glaucoma drainage devices may be necessary to prevent vision loss. Our skilled surgeons at Southend Private Hospital offer these options based on each patient's specific needs.
It’s recommended that individuals over 40 get regular eye exams every 1-2 years. If you have a family history of glaucoma, you may need more frequent screenings.
Is glaucoma curable?
While there is no cure for glaucoma, early diagnosis and treatment can slow progression and protect vision. Ongoing monitoring is essential for managing this lifelong condition.
What are the risks of untreated glaucoma?
Without treatment, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss and blindness. Regular eye exams and following your treatment plan are critical to preserving your vision.
