Patients choose Mount Alvernia Hospital for:
“The whole process was seamless. I was booked quickly, the scan was done within minutes, and my results were sent straight to my doctor.”

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation that pass through the body. Dense materials such as bone absorb more X-rays and appear white on the image, while softer tissues like muscles and organs appear in shades of grey.
The radiographer positions the scanner to target the specific area your clinician needs to examine – for example your chest, hand, knee or spine. Protective coverings are used where appropriate to minimise unnecessary exposure, although the amount of radiation used is extremely low.
Your images are immediately reviewed by a consultant radiologist, who interprets the findings and prepares a detailed report. This is then sent securely to your referring doctor or consultant for review and discussion with you
An X-ray is one of the most commonly used diagnostic tests in medicine. It uses a small, safe dose of radiation to produce detailed images of the body’s internal structures, particularly bones and certain soft tissues.
X-rays can reveal a wide range of medical conditions and injuries, such as:
The scan itself is quick and painless. You’ll be asked to remain still for a few seconds while the image is captured. Most X-rays are completed in under ten minutes, and you can return to normal activities immediately afterwards.
At Mount Alvernia Hospital, all imaging is performed using digital radiography, which produces high-resolution images instantly and reduces radiation exposure compared with older techniques.
Our radiology team supports a wide range of medical specialists, including orthopaedic surgeons, respiratory medicine specialists and physiotherapists, allowing patients to receive a full diagnostic and treatment plan in one place.
In most cases, you’ll receive your X-ray results within 24 to 48 hours, depending on the urgency and whether you are a self-referred or consultant-referred patient.
If your X-ray is part of an ongoing hospital appointment or clinic visit, your doctor may discuss the findings with you on the same day.
For self-pay or GP referrals, the consultant radiologist’s written report is sent directly to your referring clinician as soon as it is completed.
Our radiology department prioritises prompt communication so you don’t face unnecessary delays or anxiety while waiting for results.
The cost of a private X-ray depends on the area being examined and the number of images required. Give us a call and our advisors can put together a personalised quote for you, which will include the imaging procedure, consultant radiologist report, and secure access to your digital images if required.
Private health insurance often covers X-rays when requested by a consultant or GP.
When you arrive for your X-ray, you’ll be welcomed by one of our radiographers, who will explain the process and answer any questions. Depending on the area being scanned, you may be asked to remove jewellery or clothing that could interfere with the image. A lead apron may be provided to protect parts of the body not being imaged.
You’ll then be positioned comfortably, and the radiographer will step briefly behind a screen to take the image. The exposure lasts only a fraction of a second, and most scans are completed within a few minutes.
Because X-rays use very low radiation levels, they are considered safe for adults and children. However, if you are or might be pregnant, it’s important to let the radiographer know before your scan.
After your appointment, the images are reviewed by a consultant radiologist, and a written report is sent to your clinician – often on the same day.
Choosing Mount Alvernia Hospital for your diagnostic imaging means choosing speed, accuracy and professional care. Our radiology department is equipped with modern digital imaging technology and staffed by experienced radiographers and consultant radiologists.
We understand that waiting for test results can be stressful. That’s why we prioritise prompt appointments, clear communication, and a supportive experience from referral through to results.
Our hospital also offers complementary diagnostic services including CT, MRI, ultrasound, echocardiography, and bone density scanning – allowing your care to continue seamlessly if further imaging is required.
