What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound scan (also known as sonography) is a safe, painless imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create pictures of the inside of your body.

It helps doctors visualise organs, tissues and blood flow without using radiation, making it a preferred method for many diagnostic and monitoring purposes.

At Mount Alvernia Hospital, our ultrasound services include:

  • Abdominal scans – for liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen, and bladder
  • Pelvic scans – to assess reproductive organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and prostate
  • Pregnancy and obstetric scans – early pregnancy, dating or reassurance scans
  • Vascular scans – assessing blood flow in veins and arteries
  • Musculoskeletal scans – evaluating muscles, tendons, and joints
  • Thyroid and neck scans – investigating swellings, nodules, or gland issues
  • Testicular and scrotal scans – for lumps, pain, or swelling

All scans are performed by qualified radiographers and sonographers under consultant supervision.

How does an ultrasound work?

Ultrasound scanners use a small handheld probe that emits sound waves. When the probe is moved over your skin, the waves bounce off your internal tissues and organs, creating images on a monitor.

This real-time imaging allows radiologists to:

  • Assess organ structure and size
  • Detect cysts, tumours, or abnormalities
  • Monitor pregnancies and foetal growth
  • Guide medical procedures (e.g. biopsies or fluid drainage)

Because ultrasound doesn’t involve radiation, it is completely safe for adults, children, and pregnant people.

How will I know if I need an ultrasound?

Your GP, consultant, or physiotherapist may recommend an ultrasound if you have symptoms or conditions that require internal imaging.

Common reasons include:

  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Lumps, swelling, or unexplained pain
  • Urinary or pelvic symptoms
  • Irregular periods or fertility concerns
  • Soft-tissue or joint injuries
  • Suspected gallstones, kidney stones, or cysts
  • Monitoring a known condition or post-surgery recovery

What does a transvaginal ultrasound show?

A transvaginal ultrasound is a type of pelvic scan used to obtain detailed images of the female reproductive organs, including the:

  • Uterus
  • Ovaries
  • Fallopian tubes
  • Cervix

This scan is particularly useful for investigating:

  • Pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding
  • Fertility or ovulation issues
  • Suspected fibroids, cysts, or endometriosis
  • Early pregnancy viability and foetal development

It involves inserting a small, lubricated probe into the vagina. The procedure is usually quick (about 10–15 minutes) and performed with care and sensitivity by our experienced sonographers. Most people find the scan uncomfortable rather than painful.

Can ultrasound detect cancer?

Ultrasound can help identify suspicious lumps, cysts, or masses, and is often the first imaging test used to assess an abnormality. However, while ultrasound can detect changes that may suggest cancer, it cannot confirm a cancer diagnosis on its own.

If needed, your consultant may recommend further imaging (such as a CT, MRI, or biopsy) to provide more detail.

Ultrasound is often used to guide biopsies, helping doctors take tissue samples safely and accurately.

Can you eat before an ultrasound?

Preparation for your scan depends on the type of ultrasound you’re having:

  • Abdominal ultrasound: You may be asked to avoid eating or drinking for 4–6 hours before your appointment to reduce bowel gas and ensure clearer images
  • Pelvic ultrasound: You’ll usually be asked to drink water and keep your bladder full (see below)
  • Musculoskeletal, thyroid, or vascular scans: No special preparation is usually required

Our imaging team will provide specific instructions when you book your appointment.

Why do you need a full bladder for an ultrasound?

A full bladder acts as a clear ‘window’ that helps transmit sound waves more effectively.
This improves the visibility of organs such as the uterus, ovaries, and prostate during pelvic scans.

You’ll typically be asked to:

  • Drink around 500ml to 1 litre of water one hour before your appointment
  • Avoid emptying your bladder until after the scan

If you’re uncomfortable, let your sonographer know. They can adjust your scan timing or allow partial emptying if needed.
