Mount Alvernia Hospital provides expert haematology services, with fast access to diagnostic tests and treatments for your blood health
An iron infusion is a medical treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through an intravenous (IV) line. This procedure is typically used to treat conditions such as iron deficiency or iron deficiency anaemia, if oral iron supplements are ineffective or poorly tolerated.
Choosing private healthcare with us ensures you have rapid access to consultations, diagnostic tests, and treatments for timely and effective care. Located in Guildford, we help people across Surrey and surrounding areas access high-quality, patient-focused haematology care.
Haematologists are specialists in the treatment of blood and bone marrow conditions, including blood cancers.
Our specialist haematologists diagnose and manage a wide range of blood disorders, from anaemia to autoimmune disease, to complex coagulation conditions. Our team helps provide clinical care in a comfortable hospital environment. They help run tests, analyse samples in the haematology lab, and supervise chemotherapy and other treatments administered at our dedicated St Martha’s Unit.
The dose of iron required to help correct your anaemia and replenishment of iron stores will be individually calculated based on your needs.
During the infusion, a solution containing iron is slowly administered into your bloodstream over a period of 30 minutes to an hour.
Iron infusions help replenish your body, improve your red blood cell production, and alleviate symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, hair loss, taste changes and other symptoms that are associated with low iron levels.
At Mount Alvernia Hospital, your treatment will take place in the comfort of our dedicated St Martha’s Unit. Here, you will have access to chemotherapy trained nurses highly experienced in venous access (anything located in the veins) and managing complex haematology treatments.
Before you receive treatment, you doctor will go through any potential side effects and get your informed consent to proceed with the infusion.
Intravenous (IV) iron infusion treatment may be covered by your private health insurance, but not always. Speak to your provider directly to see what's covered in your policy.
If you want to pay for your own treatment, you can either pay in full or take advantage of our flexible payment options, which allow you to spread the cost over a period of up to five years.
If you have low levels of iron, you might need an IV iron infusion if:
You may be recommended IV iron if you need a fast boost in iron levels, for example before surgery, to reduce the need for a blood transfusion.
Iron deficiency is rarely a disease in its own right, but almost always a symptom of either the lack of iron intake or absorption or, more commonly, a symptom of blood loss.
During your initial consultation, your doctor will go through your medical history and symptoms to assess your condition. They may suggest further investigations and make an appropriate referral, if needed, based on this.
Booking an appointment with us is simple.
You can schedule your consultation online or call our dedicated advisory team to book an appointment on 01483 570122.
Our private services offer fast-track, flexible appointments, ensuring you receive prompt care when needed.
Before an intravenous iron infusion can be given, you will need to be seen by a consultant haematologist first to assess the need for an iron infusion. At Mount Alvernia Hospital, a full blood count and iron studies can be performed at the hospital on the day.
If you have already had recent blood tests with your GP or elsewhere, no further tests will be needed.
