Arthrosamid® is a next-generation injectable treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It is designed to provide long-lasting pain relief and enhanced joint function, particularly for individuals who have not responded well to conventional therapies such as steroid injections, physiotherapy, or oral medications.

The treatment involves a single injection of a hydrogel composed of 97.5% water and 2.5% cross-linked polyacrylamide. Once injected into the knee joint, Arthrosamid® cushions the joint and integrates with the synovial membrane - the soft tissue lining the joint capsule. This integration helps reduce inflammation, stiffness, and pain, while improving overall joint mobility.

Unlike traditional Visco supplement injections, Arthrosamid® becomes part of the joint lining, offering sustained relief that can last for up to three years or more.

It is particularly effective in advanced osteoarthritis, including cases where cartilage has worn down significantly—commonly referred to as “bone-on-bone” arthritis.

Arthrosamid® offers a range of benefits that make it an attractive alternative to surgery:

  • Long-lasting pain reliefClinical studies show significant pain reduction as early as four weeks post-injectionTreatment with Arthrosamid® remains safe and effectivfor its intended use five years after injection.

  • Minimally invasiveThe procedure is a one-step outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia. It is a single treatment and typically takes less than 30 minutes.

  • Outpatient treatmentNo hospital stay is required. This procedure is performed in our outpatient imaging department, and patients can return home the same day.

  • Safe and well-toleratedThe overall safety profile of the injectable hydrogel has been established over the last 20 years. Side effects are generally mild and temporary, such as minor swelling or discomfort at the injection site and there is no disruptive recovery period usually associated with surgery.

  • Improved mobility and quality of lifePatients often report better joint function and reduced reliance on pain medications.

  • Delays or avoids surgery For many, Arthrosamid® can postpone or even eliminate the need for knee replacement surgery.

At Mount Alvernia Hospital, Arthrosamid® is administered in a simple, one-step procedure by qualified Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist, Dr Chintu Gademsetty following a referral from Mr Oliver Templeton-Ward, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon.

The process includes:

  1. The patient is required to take oral antibiotics one hour prior to treatment.
  2. Local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area around the knee.
  3. The knee is cleaned and prepared for injection.
  4. Using ultrasound guidance, the hydrogel is injected directly into the joint space.
  5. A small dressing is applied, and patients are typically able to walk out shortly after.

Once inside the joint, the hydrogel integrates with the synovial lining, enhancing the viscosity of the synovial fluid. This acts like a shock absorber, reducing friction between bones and cushioning the joint. Over time, this helps to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and restore mobility.

Clinical trials have shown that Arthrosamid® not only improves symptoms but also maintains these improvements over the long term. In a three-year prospective study, patients experienced sustained reductions in pain and stiffness, with no degradation of the hydrogel.

Arthrosamid® is suitable for most adults with knee osteoarthritis, particularly those who:

  • Have moderate to severe symptoms
  • Have not responded to other non-surgical treatments
  • Are not ready or eligible for knee replacement surgery
  • Prefer a minimally invasive option with long-term benefits

However, it may not be appropriate for individuals with active infections, bleeding disorders, or those currently on anticoagulant therapy. Your consultant will assess your medical history to determine if Arthrosamid® is right for you.
