Some of the common symptoms that may indicate a problem in the shoulder or elbow are:

  • Pain and/or inflammation.
  • Stiffness.
  • Weakness.
  • Instability or frequent dislocations.
  • Pain at the end of the collarbone (clavicle).
  • Unusual noises during movement, such as popping, clicking, or grinding

We help patients address these issues through comprehensive assessments and tailored treatment plans.

  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Elbow Bursitis
  • Arthritis in your elbow joint
  • Cubital tunnel syndrome
  • Fractures
  • Tendinitis
  • Dislocations

If you're experiencing any of these conditions, our consultants can quickly provide a diagnosis and offer a personalised treatment plan to address your shoulder and/or elbow condition to help alleviate your pain and prevent further complications.

Shoulder pain can be treated without surgery. Your consultant will discuss a range of available treatment options with you. Depending on the condition, shoulder physiotherapy exercises or steroid injection therapy may provide pain relief.

However, for more severe cases or when non-surgical treatments have not worked, surgery might be the best course of action.

Our consultants are highly experienced in performing a range of operations to resolve the underlying issue of shoulder pain.

Surgery for shoulder pain

You can have a shoulder arthroscopy, which is a minimally invasive surgery using small incisions and a camera to repair damaged tissues, such as rotator cuff tears or labral tears.

In cases of severe arthritis or joint damage, partial or total shoulder replacement may be necessary to restore function and relieve pain.

We also offer capsular release, which is the surgical release of a tight or contracted shoulder joint capsule, often performed to improve your range of motion in conditions like frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis).

Your recovery time

Shoulder surgery recovery times can vary widely depending on the type of surgery performed, your overall health, age, and the specific circumstances of the injury or condition being treated. It's important to follow your surgeon's specific recommendations and guidelines for post-surgery care to ensure optimal recovery.

Our experienced physiotherapists are an integral part of the team, providing non-surgical treatment options as well as post-surgical rehabilitation to support recovery after shoulder surgery.

Conservative treatments are explored first, as many conditions can be effectively managed without the need for surgery. However, if surgery is required , the type of procedure will be tailored to your personal circumstances. Some of the procedures we most commonly perform to treat elbow pain include:

Tennis elbow release

Surgical release of the extensor tendon at the lateral epicondyle to relieve pain and inflammation associated with tennis elbow.

Golfer's elbow release

The surgical release of your flexor tendon at the medial epicondyle to treat golfer's elbow and alleviate pain and inflammation.

An elbow arthroscopy

A minimally invasive procedure using a small camera and instruments inserted through small incisions to diagnose and treat various elbow conditions, such as loose bodies, osteoarthritis, or ligament injuries.

If surgery is required, you will have your procedure at Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen under the care of the same consultant you saw at Inverness Outreach Clinic.

Your consultant will be supported by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team of healthcare professionals and administration staff. This team will provide the highest level of care in a friendly and comfortable environment at Albyn Hospital.

Follow-up reviews with your consultant and wound care can be provided out at Inverness Outpatient Centre.

During your consultation, your consultant will evaluate your symptoms, take a medical history, and perform a physical examination to assess the condition of your shoulder or elbow. Depending on the findings of the physical examination and your medical history, your consultant may require you to have diagnostic tests such as X-ray to provide detailed images of the bones, joints, soft tissues, and nerves in the hand and wrist.

Based on the diagnosis, they will recommend appropriate treatment options tailored to your specific condition and needs.
