Osteoarthritis occurs when the smooth cartilage across the surface of your joint wears down over time. You'll sometimes hear it referred to as wear and tear arthritis. It happens as you age and your joints become progressively damaged through overuse. The wear and tear can make your joint very painful and stiff and can reduce your mobility, interfering with your daily activities and quality of life. This is the most common type of arthritis both in the UK and worldwide and it is the most common reason why people have joint replacement surgery.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) currently affects more than 400,000 people in the UK and can happen at any age. It is an inflammatory joint condition caused by an autoimmune disease, which happens when your body attacks its healthy cells by mistake. This often causes pain, swelling, and inflammation in your joints. Joints affected by RA are commonly surrounded by inflamed tissue, which often results in chronic pain.
A bone fracture is a break or crack in your bone. Bone fractures vary in type and severity based on the force of impact and which bone is fractured. You might experience a simple fracture, which occurs when your bone breaks cleanly without puncturing your skin, or a compound fracture, where it pierces your skin, increasing the risk of you developing an infection.
Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes severe pain, stiffness, and limited movement in your shoulder joint. It occurs when the connective tissue around your shoulder, known as your shoulder capsule, thickens and tightens, restricting your mobility. Frozen shoulder can get progressively worse and last for years if left untreated, so it is important to get help as soon as possible if you develop symptoms.
An ankle arthroscopy is a type of keyhole surgery used for examining or repairing your damaged joint. During keyhole (arthroscopic) surgery, a thin fibreoptic camera called an arthroscope is inserted into your joint through a tiny incision (cut) in your skin. The camera is connected to a monitor that allows your consultant to examine the inside of your joint and identify any problems. If needed, surgical instruments can be inserted into your joint through a separate incision, allowing your surgeon to correct any damage.
A steroid injection, also known as a corticosteroid injection, involves the injection of anti-inflammatory medication into your painful joint or soft tissues to reduce pain and inflammation in the area. Your doctor might recommend having regular injection treatment if medication and physiotherapy has not helped alleviate your symptoms as much as you would hope. The effects of steroid injection therapy can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months at a time.
ACL reconstruction surgery is a type of knee surgery that involves repairing or reconstructing your anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). This can be done using many techniques. Your ACL is a tough band of tissue in your knee joint that joins your thigh bone to your shin bone. It runs diagonally through the inside of your knee, helping to control the back-and-forth movement of your lower leg and to stabilise your knee joint. If you have a torn ACL, you might struggle to put weight on on your knee, making walking and balancing a challenge.
