Hip pain can significantly impact your quality of life and it can make even simple tasks like walking, sitting, or climbing stairs a challenge.

At our private Inverness Outpatient Clinic, our consultant orthopaedic surgeons who specialise in hip conditions are dedicated to identifying the underlying cause of your hip pain. Through comprehensive assessment and diagnostic testing, they will develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to address your specific symptoms and conditions.

Whether you are dealing with arthritis, injury, or other hip-related issues, our ultimate goal is to restore your mobility and function, helping you regain your independence and improve your quality of life.

There are many hip conditions that can affect adults, ranging from childhood conditions to degenerative diseases that can develop as you age.

Hip pain might be caused by:

  • Repetitive strain
  • Muscle injury
  • Arthritis (both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis)
  • Fracture
  • Bursitis, which is a type of arthritis

These are just a few examples of hip conditions. Depending on the underlying cause, treatment options may include non-surgical interventions like physiotherapy or steroid injection therapy to alleviate your pain. However, in some cases, where your joint is damaged, surgery may be the only long-term solution for addressing hip pain.

How do you treat hip pain?

Our orthopaedic consultants here at the Inverness Outpatient Centre can provide a variety of treatment options for people battling with hip pain.

It's important to note that while you will meet with a consultant orthopaedic surgeon during your visit, hip symptoms and conditions can be treated without the need for surgery. Conservative treatments will often be used first as these can be very effective, particularly for less extensive damage to the joint.

These are:

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy exercises can help improve hip strength, flexibility, and range of motion. A physiotherapist can design a personalised exercise program to address specific muscle imbalances, improve joint stability, and alleviate pain.

Orthotics or shoe inserts

Customised orthotic devices or shoe inserts can help correct biomechanical abnormalities and improve alignment, reducing stress on the hip joint during weight-bearing activities.

Pain medication

Prescription medication such as creams, gels, or patches can provide localised pain relief when applied to your hip area.

Steroid injections

Injecting anti-inflammatory steroids directly into the hip joint can offer both pain relief by reducing inflammation and suppressing immune system activity within the joint. While this treatment can provide significant relief for a period of time, its effects are temporary and may diminish over time with repeated injections. Therefore, this treatment is typically not considered a long-term treatment strategy for hip pain.

If you need surgery, you will attend our Albyn Hospital in Aberdeen and undergo surgery under the care of the same consultant you visit our outpatient clinic.

Follow-up reviews with your consultant and wound care can be provided out at Inverness Outpatient Centre.

When you meet with your surgeon, they will ask you to talk about your symptoms. They will ask you several questions, like:

  • How long have you had them?
  • What symptoms do you have?
  • Have your symptoms been getting worse?
  • Have you tried any treatments already? If so, did they help?
  • Are your symptoms stopping you from doing any particular activities or movements?

They will also take a medical history and carry out a detailed physical examination of your hip. They may examine your back and lower leg as well if they suspect a problem in any of these places is causing referred pain in your hip.

Your consultant may refer you for further investigations such as MRI scans to investigate the cause of your pain. Your consultant will use your test results to confirm a diagnosis and plan appropriate treatment. They will discuss the diagnosis with you and explain the treatment options available to you. If you have any questions or concerns about anything, they will always be very happy to talk through these with you.
