If you have severe pain, stiffness and disability, a hip replacement should reduce your pain and help you to walk more easily
If you are living with severe hip pain, stiffness and reduced mobility, everyday activities can become increasingly difficult. Walking, climbing stairs, getting in and out of a car, or even putting on your shoes may cause discomfort. When other treatments are no longer effective, hip replacement surgery may help reduce your pain and improve your movement.
At Fairfield Independent Hospital, we offer private hip replacement surgery in St Helens, delivered by experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeons. You will receive personalised care from initial consultation through to rehabilitation, with the aim of helping you return to a more active and comfortable life.
Choosing private treatment means you can access specialist assessment without unnecessary delay, in a calm and supportive hospital environment.
A hip replacement, also known as total hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure where a damaged hip joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint (prosthesis).
The hip is a ball-and-socket joint. Over time, conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, injury or fractures can damage the smooth cartilage that allows the joint to move freely. When cartilage wears away, bone can rub against bone, causing pain and stiffness.
During surgery, the damaged ball (the head of the thigh bone) is replaced with a metal or ceramic ball attached to a stem placed inside the thigh bone. The socket in the pelvis is resurfaced and fitted with a durable lining. Together, these components create a new, smooth-moving joint.
The aim of hip replacement surgery is to:
Most patients experience significant improvement in symptoms once they have recovered from surgery.
The cost of private hip replacement surgery at Fairfield Independent Hospital depends on factors including your individual clinical needs and the type of implant used, as well as which consultant you choose to have treatment with.
You will receive clear and transparent information about costs before committing to treatment. This typically includes the surgeon’s fee, hospital charges, anaesthetist fees and aftercare.
If you are self-funding, our team can discuss fixed-price packages and available payment options. If you have private medical insurance, we recommend contacting your insurer for pre-authorisation. Our staff are happy to assist with documentation and queries to help make the process straightforward.
Our aim is to ensure you feel fully informed about both your treatment and the financial aspects of your care.
Your initial consultation is an important opportunity to discuss your symptoms and explore whether hip replacement surgery is right for you.
Your consultant orthopaedic surgeon will:
