Spinal surgery in Aberdeen

Spinal surgery can relieve pain or weakness caused by compressed spinal nerves, helping you to get back on your feet.

Spinal surgery, carried out by an experienced orthopaedic spinal surgeon, may be recommended when nerves in the spine become compressed due to conditions such as spinal stenosis, herniated discs or age-related degeneration. This pressure can affect how nerves function, leading to ongoing symptoms such as persistent pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the arms or legs, and in some cases, difficulty walking or reduced mobility.

Surgical procedures, including spinal decompression, are designed to relieve this pressure on the nerves, helping to ease pain, restore movement and improve overall quality of life, particularly when non-surgical treatments have not provided sufficient relief.

Seeking early assessment from a specialist spinal surgeon can help prevent symptoms from worsening and support a safer, more comfortable return to everyday activities.

At Albyn Hospital, patients presenting with back pain or leg pain are assessed by a highly experienced orthopaedic spinal surgeon specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal conditions.

The initial consultation begins with a detailed assessment focusing on symptoms such as back pain, leg pain, numbness, tingling or muscle weakness. A full medical history is reviewed, along with any previous treatments or investigations, to build a clear understanding of the condition. A comprehensive physical examination is then carried out to assess posture, spinal alignment, range of movement, muscle strength and reflexes. This helps identify potential signs of nerve compression, disc problems or other spinal disorders.

If further investigation is required, the consultant may arrange advanced diagnostic imaging, including MRI scans, X-rays or CT scans, to provide a detailed view of the spine and confirm an accurate diagnosis. (Please note that any diagnostic test required are charged in addition to the initial consultation fee)

Following diagnosis, a tailored treatment plan is created to support each patient’s recovery. Non-surgical treatments are typically recommended first and may include specialist physiotherapy to improve strength, mobility and function, or targeted spinal injection therapy to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

If these conservative treatments do not provide sufficient relief, spinal surgery may be recommended by the consultant as the most effective option to alleviate symptoms, restore mobility and improve long-term quality of life.
