Olivia’s story: Rebuilding confidence and strength after ACL surgery
One patient’s experience of ACL reconstruction surgery at Chelsfield Park Hospital
Meet Olivia
Olivia works in an office job, spending most of her day sitting at a desk. To stay active, she made regular gym sessions part of her routine after work, though she didn’t play any organised sports. Before her accident, Olivia had no pain or mobility issues and enjoyed keeping fit.In early 2024, a skiing holiday with friends would change everything.
Olivia’s accident
During a skiing trip with friends, Olivia joined the group on a gentle green run on the third day of the holiday.I got off the ski lift and just couldn’t stop. My skis got tangled in some netting, and I fell awkwardly. The pain was instant and intense. I thought I’d broken my leg. It was a bit of a disaster. I can laugh now, but I was hysterical at the time; it was definitely not funny then!
A snowmobile was sent to collect her, but during the rescue, the snowmobile tipped over, trapping her underneath.
An X-ray at the local medical centre showed no fractures, but she was fitted with a full-length metal leg brace and told to rest.
Despite the accident, Olivia stayed to finish the holiday, watching friends ski past while she relaxed at nearby bars.
Olivia’s diagnosis and decision to have surgery
Back home, Olivia initially tried to carry on, but her knee remained swollen and painful. She struggled to bend it fully and was forced to limp around. She already knew the team at Chelsfield Park Hospital in Kent, having previously undergone surgery on her left knee in 2023, followed by physiotherapy with Nick, one of the hospital’s senior physios.
“When I walked into my physio session limping, Nick just looked at me and said, ‘What on earth have you done to your right knee?’ He sent me for an MRI – and that’s when we found out it was an ACL tear.”
Nick arranged an MRI, which confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee, which is a significant injury requiring reconstructive surgery.
Once I had the diagnosis, there was no question about where I’d go for treatment. I’d already been treated at Chelsfield Park for my left knee, and I knew the staff, the facilities, and how amazing everyone was. It was a no-brainer.
Olivia’s experience at Chelsfield Park Hospital
Olivia describes being nervous before both of her knee surgeries, as these were her first major operations.
Having her dad stay with her before and after surgery provided comfort and reassurance.
“He waited in my room, and the nurses looked after him so well – he even got tea and biscuits! Having that private space and knowing he was there when I came round meant a lot.”
She recalls being extremely anxious before her ACL procedure:
“I was petrified. Everyone’s heard about ACL injuries ending footballers’ careers. I was in tears going down to theatre, but the anaesthetist and nurses were amazing. One of them even held my hand the whole way down.”
Post-surgery, Olivia was fitted with a cooling device that circulated cold water around her knee to reduce swelling. She recalls how attentive her team were.
“They kept checking on me constantly – pain, sickness, everything. I felt really cared for. Every single member of the team was just incredible. Every time I went in, they remembered me. If I’d mentioned something in a previous appointment, they’d ask how it was going.”
Olivia’s recovery and physiotherapy
After discharge, Olivia continued her recovery with physiotherapist Nick, who she specifically requested. Her rehabilitation focused on rebuilding strength, agility, and confidence. She also had follow-up appointments for wound care and stitch removal.
“Nick already knew me and my left knee, so he understood exactly what I needed. He was brilliant. It wasn’t just about physical recovery, but it was about confidence too. I’d ask, ‘can I do this?’ and he’d say, ‘there’s nothing you can’t do – just try it.’” “The nurses were so kind. Even when I felt faint seeing my wound for the first time! They’d always stop me in the corridor to check on my scar and give advice. They went above and beyond.”

By early 2025, Olivia had fully recovered and achieved something incredible: “I ran a half marathon! I signed up a month after being discharged from physio. I trained slowly and carefully but crossing that finish line was one of my proudest moments. I couldn’t have done it without Nick, my consultant Mr Wolczak, and all the hospital staff. They literally rebuilt me.”
She also raised money for charity in the process. Looking back, Olivia says what stands out most is the personal touch and outstanding care of the Chelsfield Park team:
“Every member of staff was amazing. They remembered me, asked about my progress, and even the nurse who took out my stitches was there the day I got discharged from physio. Her name was Sam and she was just lovely. Everything was well explained. I never felt rushed or like my questions were a problem. The support was incredible. Even when I had a little funny turn seeing my wound for the first time, the nurses were so kind and reassuring.”
Reflecting on her experience
When asked what stands out most about her time at Chelsfield Park, Olivia doesn’t hesitate.
“The staff. Every single person was amazing. They remembered me, remembered things I’d said, and always asked about my progress. There was one nurse, Sam, who did my pre-op, took out my stitches, and then was there on the day I finished physio. She said, ‘Let me see your scars!’ It’s those personal touches that mean the world.”
“You never feel like just another patient. They genuinely care about you as a person.”
Looking ahead
Now fully recovered and back to her active lifestyle, Olivia’s perspective on her injury has shifted.
“It was such a horrible experience at the time – being stuck on that mountain, feeling helpless. But looking back now, I can laugh about it. It taught me patience and reminded me how strong I actually am.”
Her story is a powerful reminder that with expert care, personal support, and determination, recovery from even serious injuries is possible.
If anyone’s facing ACL surgery, I’d tell them not to be afraid. The journey is tough, but it’s so worth it. I feel like myself again – maybe even stronger than before. It’s that special, personal touch that made the experience unforgettable.
