Background

Mr Zahir Abbasi is a senior consultant Urological Surgeon at Rotherham NHS Trust.  He grew up in Yorkshire and graduated from the University of Dundee in 1991. His junior house jobs were in his hometown of Bradford, following this he was taught by Emeritus Professor Harold Ellis at Guy’s Hospital in London when he was a prosector (teaching anatomy to medical and dental students). He returned to Yorkshire to start his surgical training in Leeds where he completed the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons. He performed research at the University of Newcastle and also taught anatomy to the medical students during his time there.

He undertook his specialist training on the East of Scotland programme in Urology, this was mainly based in Edinburgh.  

Mr Abbasi returned to Yorkshire to take up his consultant post in Rotherham in 2006, practicing general urology and specialising in cancer surgery and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. He has had the role of urology cancer lead for over 14 years. He has maintained his interest in general urology, andrology and stone surgery. He specialises in prostate surgery using laser (HoLEP) and steam procedure of the prostate (Rezum).

Teaching and Training

Mr Abbasi is an examiner for the University of Sheffield Medical School and Honorary Senior Lecturer, as well as clinical and educational supervisor to junior doctors.
