Mr Zafar (Zaf) Naqui FRCS (Tr & Orth), Dip Hand Surg (BSSH, FESSH) is a Consultant Hand & Wrist Surgeon based in Manchester who practises exclusively in hand and wrist surgery. He specialises in the management of thumb arthritis, including advanced thumb joint reconstruction, as well as hand and wrist pain, nerve compression syndromes, Dupuytren’s disease and complex hand injuries.

He has over 25 years of surgical experience and has been a consultant since 2008. His practice is focused on providing clear diagnosis, careful assessment and a tailored treatment plan for each patient. He offers both non-surgical and surgical treatment options and supports patients in making informed decisions about their care.

Mr Naqui performs a high volume of thumb joint reconstruction procedures and teaches these techniques to other surgeons. He leads national cadaveric masterclass training courses in hand surgery and is an examiner for both the British and European hand surgery diplomas.

He completed advanced fellowship training in hand and wrist surgery in the UK and internationally. He holds both the British and European Diplomas in Hand Surgery and was awarded the UK’s first Master of Hand Surgery degree by the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and the University of Manchester. He grew up in Manchester and was educated at Manchester Grammar School before studying medicine at University College London. He is actively involved in research, teaching and surgical training, with publications and contributions to specialist textbooks, and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester.

He has held senior leadership roles at Salford Royal Major Trauma Centre, including Clinical Director and lead roles in governance and patient safety. He has also held senior roles within the British Society for Surgery of the Hand over more than a decade, including as Honorary Treasurer.

He holds senior leadership roles within European hand surgery and is due to take up the Presidency of the Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH), becoming the first UK surgeon to hold this role.

He sees private patients at The Alexandra Hospital.
