Personal Profile

Professor William Ribbans qualified from the Royal Free Hospital, London.  He held training posts principally in London and was a Senior Registrar on the Middlesex/Royal National Orthopaedic rotation. He completed Fellowships in Sheffield and at Harvard University and trained in the assessment and surgical treatment of bone, joint and soft-tissue problems.  Professor Ribbans has also completed extensive training in medicine, general surgery and trauma and orthopaedic surgery.

In 1991 he was appointed as an Orthopaedic Consultant Surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital and in 1996 returned to his home town to commence work at Northampton General Hospital. Since 2012 Professor Ribbans has been working clinically in the private medical sector and acting as Medical Director to the Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Centre at Moulton.  He is also a Director of The County Clinic, Northampton.

Professor Ribbans works closely with a network of colleagues in medicine, surgery, radiology, anaesthesia, physiotherapy and podiatry, both locally and nationally, to provide his patients optimal assessment, advice and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.

He acts as Orthopaedic adviser to a number of sporting organisations including UK Athletics and is Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the English National Ballet and Northampton Town FC as well as Chief Medical Officer to Northamptonshire Cricket Club.

In addition to his clinical commitments, Professor Ribbans is extensively involved in education and research. He lectures nationally and internationally, hosts numerous meetings and supervises a number of PhD students. He has a personal chair in Sports Medicine at the University of Northampton and has had appointments at the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh continuously since 1998.
