Professor Usman Jaffer is a Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon with more than two decades of medical and surgical experience. His NHS practice is based within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where he is a member of the vascular surgery consultant team at St Mary's Hospital. Alongside his clinical practice, he has longstanding interests in medical education, vascular ultrasound, research and the development of new approaches to the diagnosis and management of vascular disease.

Profssor Jaffer qualified in medicine in 2002 and went on to undertake extensive postgraduate surgical training. He holds Master's degrees in both Surgery and Medical Ultrasound and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. This combination of surgical and ultrasound expertise is particularly valuable in his vascular practice, allowing him to integrate clinical examination and vascular imaging when assessing patients. Where appropriate, ultrasound assessment can be performed during the consultation, helping to provide patients with a clearer understanding of their condition and enabling efficient investigation and treatment planning. 

His clinical practice encompasses both vascular and general surgery. He assesses and treats patients with arterial and venous disease, including peripheral arterial disease, varicose veins, leg ulceration, diabetic foot disease and other problems relating to circulation in the lower limbs. His wider vascular experience includes peripheral bypass surgery and the assessment and treatment of aneurysmal disease. In general surgery, he sees patients with common conditions including hernias and benign soft-tissue lumps and bumps. 

A particular area of Professor Jaffer's expertise is the assessment of circulation in people with diabetes and diabetic foot problems. This is an area in which early recognition of impaired blood flow can make an important difference to treatment planning and wound healing. He is involved in multidisciplinary diabetic foot care, working alongside specialists including diabetologists, podiatrists and other members of the wider clinical team. His current work with London Medical, for example, forms part of an integrated diabetic foot service bringing vascular surgery, podiatry and diabetes expertise together. 

Professor Jaffer also has a significant academic and research background. Within the Section of Vascular Surgery at Imperial College London, his research interests include diabetic foot disease, vascular ultrasound, improving the diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease and the application of new technologies to vascular assessment. Imperial College lists him as a lead in research investigating novel Doppler and ultrasound techniques, including the use of machine learning to improve the assessment of lower-limb arterial disease, bypass grafts and vascular access. He has also acted as an academic principal investigator on work developing technology to improve the detection of peripheral arterial disease in people with diabetes. 

Education and training have been another important part of his career. Professor Jaffer holds a postgraduate qualification in medical education and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He has been involved in postgraduate teaching and supervision of higher-degree students and has contributed to surgical and vascular ultrasound training. He co-authored the Manual of Vascular Ultrasound for Surgical Practice and has developed training and assessment methods for vascular waveform and ultrasound interpretation. 

His approach to patient care is centred on clear communication and shared decision-making. Professor Jaffer believes patients should understand their diagnosis, the available treatment options and the advantages and limitations of each approach before deciding how they wish to proceed. His aim is to combine specialist surgical expertise with accessible explanations, appropriate investigation and a treatment plan tailored to the individual rather than simply treating a scan or a diagnosis. This approach is particularly valuable for vascular conditions, where treatment may range from reassurance and lifestyle measures through to minimally invasive treatment or surgery. His established patient-facing profiles similarly emphasise giving patients the information they need to make informed choices about their care. 

Professor Jaffer sees adult patients and speaks English, Punjabi and Urdu, enabling him to communicate directly with a broad range of patients and families.
