Dr Usman Ahmed is a Consultant in Acute and General Internal Medicine with extensive experience in the assessment and management of acutely unwell patients and oversees the care of complex medical presentations. Dr Ahmed undertakes his NHS clinical work within Hillingdon Hospital and he undertakes his private practice as an Acute and General Medicine Consultant. Dr Ahmed graduated in Medicine from the University of Exeter in 2012. Following qualification, he undertook broad postgraduate medical training across a range of specialties, including acute and general medicine, cardiology, respiratory medicine, intensive care medicine, and geriatric medicine. This broad clinical training provided him with extensive experience in managing patients with both acute and chronic medical conditions, particularly those presenting with diagnostic uncertainty or multiple co-existing medical problems. He subsequently completed higher specialist training in Acute and General Internal Medicine and has developed particular expertise in the rapid assessment, investigation, stabilisation, and ongoing management of patients presenting to acute hospital services. Dr Ahmed was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP) in 2024. He was recognised for his

contribution to clinical medicine, education, leadership, and service development. In his current NHS leadership role, Dr Ahmed is responsible for helping oversee Acute Medicine services, including the Acute Medical Unit, Same Day Emergency Care and ambulatory pathways. His work involves close collaboration with Emergency Medicine, medical specialties, nursing teams, allied health professionals, primary care, operational managers, and community services. He has been closely involved in developing pathways designed to improve patient flow, reduce avoidable hospital admission, support earlier discharge, and provide appropriate alternatives to traditional inpatient care. In addition to his NHS work, Dr Ahmed practices privately as a Consultant in General and Internal Medicine. His private practice focuses on patients presenting with undifferentiated or complex medical symptoms, including fatigue, breathlessness, unexplained weight loss, recurrent infections and multi-system medical problems. He also provides medical assessment and coordination of care for patients requiring input from several specialties, working closely with colleagues in cardiology, respiratory medicine, gastroenterology, endocrinology and renal medicine where appropriate. A significant part of his clinical and leadership work has focused on the development of Same Day Emergency Care. This includes creating and refining pathways for conditions such as venous thromboembolism, cellulitis, respiratory illness, chest pain, syncope, anaemia, and other acute medical presentations that may be safely investigated and managed without prolonged hospital admission. He has also contributed to the development of virtual ward and admission-avoidance pathways, with an emphasis on providing safe, efficient and patient-centred alternatives to inpatient care. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Ahmed has a longstanding interest in medical education and postgraduate training. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Medical Education and has undertaken significant undergraduate and postgraduate teaching throughout his career. He has held roles as a Senior Clinical Teacher with Imperial College London and has also contributed to medical education with Brunel Medical School. Dr Ahmed is actively involved in the education, supervision and assessment of doctors at multiple stages of training. He has experience supervising foundation doctors, internal medicine trainees and higher specialty trainees and regularly supports junior doctors working within Acute Medicine. His

educational activity includes bedside clinical teaching, case-based discussions, structured teaching sessions, simulation, workplace-based assessments, career guidance and clinical supervision. He has also contributed extensively to formal postgraduate assessment and training processes. Dr Ahmed has participated in Annual Review of Competence Progression panels for Foundation and Internal Medicine Training programmes, as well as assessments involving higher medical trainees. He has contributed to recruitment and interview processes for junior doctors and has experience supporting the development of clinical rotas and training structures within Acute Medicine. Dr Ahmed has a strong interest in health technology and emerging innovations that have the potential to improve the delivery of healthcare. He believes that patients should receive the highest standard of care and that appropriately designed technological solutions can support clinicians in delivering safer, more efficient and increasingly personalised services. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Ahmed is involved in mentoring and advisory roles with emerging health technology projects, providing clinical insight, governance expertise and practical guidance to support the development of solutions that are relevant to both patients and healthcare professionals. Clinical governance, quality improvement and service development form another important component of Dr Ahmed’s work. He is involved in reviewing clinical incidents, supporting audit and quality-improvement projects, developing standard operating procedures and clinical pathways, and working with multidisciplinary teams to improve the safety and efficiency of acute medical services. His approach is centred on combining clinical quality with practical operational improvement and ensuring that service development remains focused on patient outcomes.
