About Prof Tony Kochhar

Personal Profile

Professor Tony Kochhar is a shoulder expert and upper limb surgeon, fully trained in Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. He is able to help patients with all shoulder, elbow, and wrist problems and has a commitment to best practice for all his patients.

He is a Visiting Professor of Sports Science at the University of Greenwich, with a special interest in sports injuries and strength and conditioning. As well as being fellowship-trained in Upper Limb conditions at an internationally recognised centre of excellence, he has a Masters degree in Orthopaedic Engineering.

He has written several papers and book chapters on shoulder conditions including the Latarjet procedure, the rotator cuff and the role of anaesthesia in shoulder surgery which have been published internationally. He has given lectures and presentations at national and international meeting and conferences and teaches both physical therapists and GPs regularly.

His current interests include rotator cuff surgery and recovery, biceps and pec tears, minimally invasive surgery, bone healing and techniques to aid rapid return to sport after injury, nutrition and its relation to post-operative outcomes, the use of stem cells for cartilage and tendon repair, the efficacy of steroid injections, platelet-rich plasma, ligament and cartilage reconstruction.

He has experienced shoulder surgery first hand, having had rotator cuff surgery himself, so understands the anxieties patients often experience both around surgery, and post-op pain and recovery.

Professor Kochhar’s philosophy is that the majority of patients with shoulder and upper limb problems do not need surgery. He believes that an early, accurate assessment and a good understanding of their condition, together with a team-based approach to rehabilitation help patients to make a full recovery. He works closely with patients’ physical therapists to design, and monitor a programme of rehabilitation.

His practice has evolved during the COVID-19 pandemic and he can see patients remotely as well as in-person.

He has a special interest in strength and conditioning, and is proud to work with the Faculty of Sports Science at the University of Greenwich.

He regularly works with elite sports people and their teams and believes that every patient deserves a tailored diagnosis and treatment plan.
