About Mr Tobi Oputa

Personal Profile

Mr Tobi Oputa is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in sports and reconstructive knee surgery. His practice has a strong focus on sports related knee injuries and knee problems affecting younger and active individuals. From those looking to return to work and recreational activity, through to competitive athletes. He has particular expertise in ACL surgery, ligament reconstruction, meniscal repair and preservation, kneecap (patellofemoral) instability and dislocation, and cartilage preservation surgery. His focus is on helping patients return to sport, work and the activities that matter most to them.

Prior to his appointment as a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Oputa graduated with an MBChB from the University of Leeds in 2012, having also completed a BSc (Hons). He undertook his specialist Trauma and Orthopaedic training in the North West of England and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Trauma and Orthopaedics (FRCS Tr & Orth) in 2022.

Following completion of specialist training, he undertook advanced fellowship training at leading specialist knee centres, including the internationally renowned Wrightington Hospital and the specialist knee unit at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds. His fellowship training provided extensive experience across the breadth of sports and complex reconstructive knee surgery, including ACL and revision ACL surgery, meniscal repair, complex ligament injuries, kneecap instability, cartilage injuries and knee realignment surgery.

Mr Oputa previously competed at a high level in rugby and athletics and continues to lead a highly active lifestyle, regularly participating in HYROX events and other sporting activities. Combined with his specialist training, this sporting background has shaped his approach to treating both routine and complex knee injuries and gives him an understanding of the different demands patients place on their knees.

Mr Oputa understands the significant impact that knee injuries and ongoing knee problems can have on work, sport and everyday life. His approach starts with understanding each patient’s individual needs and what they hope to achieve from treatment. Treatment decisions are based not simply on MRI or X-ray findings, but on their symptoms, activity level and longer-term goals. He believes in providing a clear and honest discussion of both surgical and non-surgical treatment options, ensuring patients understand what to expect from their treatment and recovery. His focus is on helping patients get back to the things that are most important to them, while preserving the knee wherever possible.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Oputa has a strong academic and educational interest in sports knee surgery. He is a Senior Lecturer in Sports Surgery and Medicine and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education. He is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and has lectured on knee surgery and sports injuries. Mr Oputa has published more than 20 scientific papers and contributed to specialist academic texts, including a book chapter on ACL injuries in female athletes. He remains actively involved in research and education, helping ensure his practice reflects contemporary evidence and developments in sports knee surgery.

Mr Oputa’s aim is to help each patient overcome their knee problem and return to the lifestyle and level of activity they want to achieve, through specialist care tailored to their individual needs.
