Mr Tom Walton qualified with a first-class honours degree from Nottingham University Medical School in 1998. His urology training was undertaken in the Trent region, during which time he spent a dedicated Fellowship year training in laparoscopic surgery.
In 2010, Tom was awarded the Keith Yeates Gold Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons for outstanding performance in the FRCS(Urol) examinations. After basic surgical training he undertook a period of research focusing on the molecular basis of prostate cancer, leading to the award of Doctor of Medicine.
Following surgical training he completed the Laparoscopic and Robotic Urology Fellowship at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Australia under the tutelage of Professor Anthony Costello and Professor Declan Murphy.
Tom has been a Consultant Urological Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospital’s NHS Trust since 2012. He specialises in the management of prostate and kidney cancer, and has a particular interest in minimally-invasive laparoscopic and robotic surgery.
In 2014, he became the East Midlands’ first robotic surgeon, performing a da Vinci™ robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, and has since introduced robotic-assisted partial nephrectomy, robotic-assisted pyeloplasty, laparoscopic retroperitoneal nephrectomy and local anaesthetic transperineal (LATP) prostate biopsy to Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Tom is Director of the Nottingham Fellowship in Robotic and Laparoscopic Urology and Lead Cancer Clinician for the Urology Department at Nottingham City Hospital. He is also Deputy Chair of the Urology Expert Clinical Advisory Group (ECAG) for the East Midlands Cancer Alliance, and is an elected member of the British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) Oncology Executive Committee. In addition Tom is a member of the International Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma Collaboration, a reviewer for the BJUI, Journal of Urology and European Urology publications, and is an author of over 50 peer-reviewed urology papers.
Outside of work, Tom is a keen cyclist, golfer and walker. He is married with two children.
