Colorectal Consultant and Clinical Director Peritoneal Malignancy Institute, Basingstoke
Tom Cecil started as a Consultant colorectal Surgeon in Basingstoke in 2002. He specialises in laparoscopic colorectal surgery and peritoneal malignancy surgery. Since 2011 he has been Clinical Director of the Peritoneal Malignancy Institute in Basingstoke, one of the largest centres in the world in the treatment of peritoneal cancers. In 2021 he was appointed as the Clinical Chair for the Hampshire clinic.
In 2003 he set up the Peripherique laparoscopic training courses with laboratory skills courses, clinical workshops and hands-on clinical immersion courses. He ran one of the Lapco training centres for laparoscopic colorectal surgery. He has been on the faculty of National MDT/TME training programme, the Danish MDT laparoscopic training programme and the European laparoscopic masterclass. He was chair of the CSCCN Colorectal Network Site specific group and lead Clinician for the International Colorectal cancer Improvement programme and chaired the SCN Wessex colorectal Capacity programme. He is on the Medical Advisory board of Bowel cancer UK. He is a director of Lapco specialising in surgical training and surgical programme development.
He trained at Southampton University and did junior doctor rotation in the south of England. He was privileged to have a brief period working in MEDSTAR trauma centre in Washington DC and later a short time with Joel Leroy in Strasbourg learning laparoscopic colorectal surgery. His research was split between being the Portsmouth local co-ordinator and endoscopist for the UK Once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy screening trial and a DM on genetic polymorphisms and predisposition to adenomatous polyps. He has lectured extensively nationally and internationally on laparoscopic colorectal surgery and peritoneal malignancy and presented and published on both subjects with some of the best reported outcomes in the world.
