About Mr Sunil Kumar

Personal Profile

Mr Sunil Kumar is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who is dedicated to providing compassionate, personalised care for patients with knee conditions and sports‑related injuries. With more than three decades of specialist expertise, he is known for combining advanced surgical skills with a warm, approachable manner that helps patients feel supported throughout their treatment journey.

Mr Kumar began his medical training at the London Hospital Medical College, earning his MBBS in 1989. After achieving full registration, he completed his basic surgical training in the London region and went on to obtain Fellowships from both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His commitment to excellence led him to pursue specialist orthopaedic training between 1994 and 2000 on the renowned Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) Training Programme. During this time, he was awarded the prestigious Johnson & Johnson Arthroplasty Fellowship, recognising his outstanding potential in joint reconstruction. He further enhanced his expertise with a dedicated knee and sports trauma fellowship in New Zealand and Australia in 1999.

In 2000, Mr Kumar was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust, where he also served as Clinical Director for Musculoskeletal Services. After more than two decades of full‑time service, he transitioned to an Honorary Contract position in 2021. He continues to provide high‑quality NHS and private care.

Mr Kumar has a particular passion for treating sports injuries and has cared for athletes at many levels. He holds a prestigious FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine as well as a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He works closely with physiotherapists and collaborates with surgeons across the UK to develop and trial innovative arthroscopic (keyhole) techniques. His rapid rehabilitation programmes are designed to help patients return to activity safely and efficiently following procedures such as meniscal surgery, cartilage repair, cartilage transplantation, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and partial knee replacement.

For patients with early arthritis, Mr Kumar offers a range of minimally invasive options, including arthroscopic procedures and unicompartmental (partial) knee replacements. He also provides the latest advances in knee replacement surgery, including bespoke 3D‑printed personalised total knee replacements and robotic‑assisted knee surgery. More recently, he has been exploring biological regenerative treatments, including stem cell‑based therapies for osteoarthritis.
