About Dr Stephan Brincat

Personal Profile

Dr Brincat is a consultant specialist in Nephrology (Kidney Medicine) and General Medicine since 2011 and he is currently working at St George’s University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, London and Shirley Oaks Hospital, Croydon.

He has extensive experience in all aspects of Nephrology, comprising acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease, haematuria (blood in urine), proteinuria (protein in urine), hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetic kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease and glomerulonephritis. He is particularly interested in the management of chronic kidney disease and using evidence-based strategies to retard disease progression and acute kidney injury. At St George’s Hospital, he also provides kidney care to a sizeable cohort of patients on haemodialysis and runs a renal transplant clinic. He prides himself on achieving the highest levels of care and communication with patients, receiving excellent regular patient feedback in this regard.

Education and Training

He studied Medicine at the University of Malta, graduating in 1999, and was awarded the membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 2003, after which he moved to the United Kingdom to pursue his specialist training in Nephrology and General Medicine.

His specialist training was undertaken on the prestigious South London training programme, working in internationally renowned medical teaching institutions in the country, including the Renal and Transplant Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust, the Renal Unit at King’s College NHS Foundation Trust and at the Renal and Transplant Unit at St George’s NHS Foundation Trust. He is privileged to have worked for and alongside some of the best minds in the field in the UK. In 2010, he completed his training and in 2015, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians.

Teaching

An excellent teacher, he has maintained an active involvement in medical education at several levels, including teaching junior doctors and undergraduate students. He is a faculty member at the Simulation Lab at St George’s Hospital; an honorary senior lecturer and examiner for undergraduate students at St George’s Medical School; and teaches regularly on his unit and at the postgraduate centre.  He is passionate to be an educational supervisor to medical trainees, where he feels he can make a difference in training the next generation of consultants. For three consecutive years, he was nominated by postgraduate students for Most Inspiring Teacher. High scores from formal feedback are regularly received from the undergraduate students and postgraduate trainees. He is regularly invited to give presentations to General Practitioners (GPs) and at teaching days for specialist trainees.

Research

Dr Brincat undertook clinical research at King's College NHS Foundation Trust in anaemia of chronic kidney disease. Over the years, he presented his work at national and international conferences, and published his work in various areas of kidney disease and General Medicine. He has won best oral presentation in a regional conference and best poster in the field at a national conference.

Leadership and Service Development

He held senior leadership roles in his Trust - he was the Care Group Lead and subsequently the Clinical Director for Acute and General Medicine between 2019 - 2021. In his role, he stepped to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping patients and staff’s interests at the heart of his decision-making process. Additionally, together with a team, he set up the Acute Kidney Injury clinic service at St George's Hospital, presenting the significant benefits of the impact of the clinic service on patient care at national and international conferences.

Patient Feedback

Dr Brincat regularly seeks feedback from his patients, which is readily available on an online platform called Doctify. Some of the common themes highlighted include “approachable” manner, “a genuine concern for patient care”, “thorough” consultations and “clear, easy-to-understand explanations”. The response time for email questions is quick and the secretary is extremely helpful with dealing with administrative queries.

In his free time, he enjoys cooking dishes from worldwide cuisines with his family and plays sports regularly, including football and tennis - albeit at a very low standard.
