She completed her medical training at Liverpool Medical School in 1981 before commencing a career in obstetrics and gynaecology initially in Bristol, followed by posts in St Bartholomew's Hospital and the Homerton Hospital in Hackney, London.
Miss Whitcroft became a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 1987 and was appointed as research fellow of menopause and metabolic medicine at Kings College Hospital in 1989. Over the next four years she remained involved in research in academic medicine, investigating the effects of the menopause on cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis, and trialling new medications which were being introduced to reduce these effects.
In 1993 she was appointed as senior registrar in obstetrics and gynaecology at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Subsequently she was appointed as obstetrician and gynaecologist at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 1996. She was appointed fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in 2002.
